Trundling around Headingley in Leeds to the amusement of anyone walking past. It s a quiet night but I d love to see them cope with a busy Otley Run evening

New to Headingley but have been out in other parts of Leeds for a couple of years now.

From what I’ve seen the novelty fairly quickly wears off and they are often seen parked outside Coop stores waiting.

I used one once as a novelty and the kids found it amusing.

I'm interested to see how they compare to minicabs, I always thought it was the urban environment which was hard to do and the motorway relatively easy, unless its the A/B roads

can you get a module for the various usual collections of classic minicab experiences? from lack of language to casual racism and errr well best not mentioned

if they work well maybe it would help get down the crazy bill of sending all the SEND children all over the place to go to school

They have been in Lawnswood/Adle for a few years? If not Uber then something very similar.

I saw something that looked very like that being trialled in a quiet residential part of central London in 2017/18 or so. I seem to recall it was branded Amazon and had a 'minder' following it with a tablet computer in hand.

I can remember we had a similar thing in school. It was like a dome with wheels underneath and you had to program the commands on the keypad on the top to make it go around obstacles etc. Was space age for a primary school kid in the 90's.

How do they deal with traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and the crossing of busy roads in general.

Can they press the relevant buttoms on activated crossings, for example. Or do they need to be helped across the road like an old lady?

Yes between 2022-24 from the Coop I think it was a trial only, robots looked very similar. Run by a company called Starship maybe Uber have picked up the tech.

How heavy are they? I'd turn them on their side.

Why on earth would you do that?

I suppose given how much EVs scare you, then these must terrify you too.

You really ought to seek some help.

Yep, mate of mine lives near the Co op in Spen Lane and they have had these for a few years as you say. Bit quieter than Headingley mind for navigating pedestrians.

The Coop at Adel still use them but they seem to be a lot less popular now, don't see them moving as much. I did "help" one a year or so ago when I was walking down a road and found one on it's side making an alarm noise, I set it up right and it thanked me, played a tune and set off on it's way again.

That’s a weird take you would expect from teenage scrotes on some ropey estate, not a supposed grown up.

Do you push Deliveroo riders over ? or not quite brave enough as they may fight back ? But feel like you can pick on a motorised cool box.

Is it just anything with electric motors in it ?

I would just maybe look at the first few I see, chuckle and carry on before eventually ignoring them and just assume someone needed a pint of milk and a loaf but didn’t want to go out, or maybe it’s someone elderley, or disabled ?

Wonder if you can send it back with a note asking for twenty Bensons like I used to be dispatched with ?

We've had the Starship Robots in Milton Keynes since about 2018 and it was the worlds largest autonomous delivery fleet when deployed. It was the ideal City for trials because of the layout and the redways. Mainly used by CoOp and Tesco and a few restaurants.

We had these 10years ago in Greenwich/Lewisham - that's a very long time in terms of robot development!

Standing up for delivery drivers? FYI people have free choices to do what they want wavey

I'm not scared of EV's btw I just don' like them. Again free choices pal.
