Some of my wife's friends upload a picture to Facebook of themselves which clearly looks nothing like them. Why do people, mainly women, so this? Also annoying is people commenting rubbish like 'you look stunning babe'!

Because 99.9% of people live average boring lives, which doesn't match up to their ego-led self-view that they're actually interesting people living exciting lives.

The pictures are the modern behavioural equivalent of cats rubbing up to your legs when they need petting. It's a way to get a minute amount of attention to reinforce their deluded world view that they are not in fact average, and their lives are not in fact boring.

These are the kind of people that would come out of the Total perspective Vortex(*) as gibbering wrecks. I, of course know that I'm average and boring and know exactly how important I am in context of the universe.
