What s the most amount of cash you ve ever carried?
Discussion
As my wife liberated £10 that I’d forgotten I had from my wallet, it got me wondering about physical cash. I’m genuinely struggling to remember the last time I used cash - must be many months ago and was probably for something simple like a sandwich at a motorway services.
I started to reminisce about when almost everything was bought with cash. On a few occasions I’ve had a few thousand in an envelope, ready to pay for a secondhand car. On one occasion, I was asked by an employer to cash a company cheque and walk back to the office with £20k in a Tesco carrier bag - that one felt a bit weird…
So - what’s the most amount of cash (yours or someone else’s) you’ve ever carried around in public and why were you doing it?

Remember withdrawing £15k in cash from a bank on Brixton Rd opposite the tube, anyone’s who has been there any time of day or night will know why you’d be quite careful about who was watching that transaction happen!
Made it home with it though.
Kind of cash related - My dad used to have a shop when I was a kid and had a custom wallet made that he wore half tucked into his trousers/belt, it was made because he would put the entire days takings in it, he was essentially always walking around with a 1-2k cash only secured against his belt/waist band at all times. The wallet had a natural curve due to the positioning and every note that came out of it did too.

A fair few years ago now when I sold my L322 Range Rover the buyer gave me 25k in cash, mostly in 20's. It was a Sunday so I couldn't bank it (I had verified he was who he said he was) so I put it under the ottoman bed I had at the time thinking that even if I was burgled I would wake up when being lifted into the air
Took to the small local Natwest the following day (now closed like many tiny branches) which only had 2 windows and the clerk counted it with one of those rubber finger caps in front of some bemused locals attending the next window. I asked about a counting machine and she said 'oh no, only the big branches have those....'.
Was very glad when off my hands and in electronic balance format.

I recall flying home from LA as a youngster about 35 years ago with US$5k in cash on me, thinking that I was a hotshot and hoping that Customs wouldn’t stop me and discover it.. 😂.
Sold a car about 15 years ago; 13,000 pounds and the buyer came to my workplace with used 50 and 20 pound notes in a battered envelope. I started to count it in the office canteen and realised that I was getting some odd looks…. So I took the envelope to the local bank to make a deposit. The cashier didn’t ask half of the questions about its origin as they probably would today?!

Someone will be along soon to tell us about the time they were on the piss in South America with some random businessman who asked them to drive a van across the border with a pallet in the back. When they got to the destination and uncovered the pallet it was $100 bills stacked in there worth about €200million. Turned out the businessman was Pablo Escobar. Or something like that.
It’s getting harder and harder to get significant lumps of cash. I got about €25k out a few years ago to avoid VAT on a rather large estate agents bill when selling a house abroad. Felt proper gangsta with him counting it out in a car park. The grilling by the bank cashier made me feel like a naughty schoolboy, so it evens itself out over the day

I’ve carried Manila envelopes of cash to Morocco to sweeten a deal / get the factory owner to accept the process/machinery that was being foisted on him.
MrsRNP used to have a clothing and fashion accessory’s business - we used to buy beautiful gold and silver jewellery from a local artisan goldsmith in the pick pocket capital of Barcelona. Used to carry them back in a brown sandwich bag.

We have CHF 1000 notes here (£~950), so carrying large amounts even in an inside pocket is quite easy. Also there are no anti money laundering measures for transactions up to CHF 100k, so it’s reasonably common for cars and other big items to be paid for in cash. I think the most I’ve ever received/carried in cash at one go was around CHF 90k.

kers cramp. The next day I put it in a scruffy rucksack and took it to the bank, luckily it was all there and legit notes
