A few weeks ago Mrs BC and I went to the G***i store in Bond Street, London. On arrival a salesperson asked what we were looking for, I told her that I d quite like to see some jeans. We were offered champagne while she went off to get a selection of jeans but we were expected to view them at the door with no opportunity to wander around the store. We really wanted to look around but that didn t seem to be an option. Very odd as when I go out to buy say a pair of jeans I m very likely to go home with 3 shirts, a pair of shoes and a new hat.

Today we tried again at a G***i store in Florida. We were held at the door while they found an associate to advise us as we went around the store. We declined and went elsewhere.

Seems an odd policy and not restricted to G***i, similar policies at other super brand stores. Maybe it s down to shoplifting prevention?

ETA it wasn’t just us, they were doing the same with every potential shopper.

Possibly not but Mrs BC spent a few $’s in Dolce Gabbana a few doors away this morning.

It will be something to do with your age and brand values

Think back to when DLT left Radio One and we all had to move to Radio 2.

It comes to us all in the end.

I'm a bit of a scruff but work in the "luxury goods" world so often find myself in high end stores just out of interest rather than making purchases.

Everyone is usually very helpful and accommodating.

Maybe you look shifty?

I rarely go near Gucci though to be fair, I have some standards.

Those stores will serve almost exclusively foreign buyers who likely like the experience of shopping like that. For any normal person it’s very grim.

Buy online.

The replies aren’t taking into account that they were doing the same with EVERY shopper. As I say, sales prevention imo.

Vote with your feet.

There's now't wrong with Asda "George" stuff, or better still, have a look in your local charity shops.

Arty farty shops get on my tits.

We’re in the USA this week so we’re foreign buyers.

Not a chance of getting Mrs BC into any of those places other than to donate at charity shops.

If you and all the other shoppers were *insert target market here* they wouldn't do it to you

I am seriously out of touch so I've no idea who the latest Gucci people are. Whoever they are, they are allowed to have a wander round.

I agree it's ridiculous.

Did she not do the whole "Pretty Woman" thing?

We got blocked from entry to a new housing development near us - "I don't think we'll have anything suitable for you" the sales lady said "try our more dodgy development in Winsford."

Based on my most recent Gucci experience the target market is large groups of gypsies with unruly kids, that was Bicester though biglaugh

back in the day...late 80s i was looking to buy a 944 and went around a few indie dealers with a mate who was driving an escort rs1600i. we were both around 28. dressed in jeans t-shirts n trainers.

one place i went to had one i liked, about three years old, gunmetal metallic, black interior with beige carpets, history low mileage.

as we were wandering around the showroom the salesman came over "can i help you lads?" i asked him about the grey one and added "cash discount?" he said £750. ok.. off we went. next day we went back, "yeah ok ill take the grey one, and you said 750 discount (car was about right on price at £16k)"... salesman "... oh.. yeah. ok.. of course Sir.. come to the office" he let me know that he normlly wouldnt give such discount but thought we were just a couple of lads looking at the nice cars...but as he said it he woukd stick by it.

nice it was too.

There may be something about your appearance - and my intention is not to be rude by saying that. I have been in there a gazillion times without issue, even at the time when they were cultivating a queue outside. I think once I may have called ahead, but otherwise it was on spec. I am not a big Gucci spender either.

I went to Lancaster Ferrari in my work kit - boots, jeans, t-shirt. No one asked me if I wanted any help, and when I asked for a test drive they just laughed.

I went across the road the next day to Lamborghini and bought a Murcielargo.

That'll teach 'em at Ferrari.

The above is not true, it is a trope that is often wheeled out on PH threads like this, together with "wealth whispers". biggrin

Is it not carrying a Tesco bag of cash then pointing to it and saying you missed out?
