Somewhat amusing and somewhat disturbing thing happened at my local.
A (presumably) 18yr old bartender had to deal with change.

She had a 10p coin and after flipping it around in her hand a few times looking bewildered, eventually asked her colleague if it was a 10p or 20p. She replied " I think it's a 10p"

How did we get to this point ?! It's sad this person must've never had a piggy bank.

In a fish and chip restaurant in Falmouth I asked if the fish was locally caught, the waitress replied that it came from Switzerland.

By now having a society where most people never handle cash. As long as it was dealt with reasonably quickly is it a problem?

Sons first day in Dominos doing a part time job, he was asked to answer the phone, he suddenly realised he had never answered anything other than a mobile in his life, didn't know if he has to push a button like answering a mobile after picking up the handset.

You think that's funny try showing her some pre decimal coins or even the early decimal coins some of which were the same size as the pre but with different designs.I carry a 1955 2 and 1 shilling coin in my wallet for luck (it doesn't work by the way) as this is the year of my birth.I used to show these to people at work who did not believe they were real currency at first. Then throw in farthings/halfpennies/pennies/three penny piece/sixpence/half crown and ten shilling note.nearly everyone i showed them to were not even born when decimal currency and V.A.T were introduced. And add in the first pound coins which were similar in colour to the old Three penny bit and round without the flats on the side.

I'm sorry but how can a child reach the age of 18 without knowing the (very obvious) difference between two of our own coins?

What's that got to do with the price of fish?

It's called being lazy smile Same as answering a general knowledge question with "No idea, that was before I was born".

Skill/knowledge fade is a thing, maybe tought it aged 8 but then never saw them again for 10years

Example of my generation, I was taught
how to do long division at primary school
(I also had lessons on pocket calculators that were returned to their boxes after use…)

This example below is not immediately obvious to me & i’d struggle to explain how to do long division without a refresher - have not used since I learned it…?

Yep. Gave a watch to my niece as a 21st present. Had no idea she couldn’t read an analogue watch. She’s a clever girl but seems never taught or needed to read anything other than a digital watch.

Agree. Paying in cash causes confusion at my local fish & chip shop.

I have to confess, that it wasn't until my early 20s that I flew for the first time on my own. previously it had been with parents when I was a young kid or with friends and there's just a crowd of you and move together at an airport. I had to stop n think... right ...look on board for flight..I think I have to go to the desk indicated next to the flight number then go to security and then gate. I know sounds weird but took a sec.
