I'm sure when I went a month ago it was just a choice between standard seats and the slightly more comfortable premier seats.

I don't often go cos I think it's a rip off and not normally a pleasurable experience usually ruined by the mouth breathers who think nothing of paying for a £16 ticket, yet still fek about, look at their phones, munch through piles of food etc

Well I decided to see The Odyssey and it's Monday, cheap seats day. Well that's gone and the cheapest seats are very few as there are now 3 tiers of pricing of the normal seats.

But the joke is that quite often during the day there's hardly anyone in the screening and no one to stop you changing seats when the film starts.

Anyway, old man shouts at clouds over , think I'll stay in and find it online.

All the companies are in on it. The Travelodge website wanted me to pay more to select my room and then sent begging letters and SMS. There will be plenty of worriers who will take them up on it.

Part of the joy of staying in a Travelodge or Premier Inn is how many miles you have to walk/not walk to your room! And as I only book rooms to sleep I don't really give a flying.

Stealing ideas from theatres, no doubt. As you say, if you watch (or check online), you can probably get better seats without paying more. I've done this a few times in the likes of Royal Festival Hall where you'll see a massive block of empty seats. Doesn't work so well at Wimbledon, though, where there's someone to check your ticket at every entrance to Centre Court (the tennis court, not the shopping centre!).

Bit like when you get the modern, cheaper room in an older luxury spa hotel that's had 300 rooms bolted on to the original 20 suites in the main building: turn right at reception, along a corridor, left, up some stairs, right, along another corridor, left, up some stairs, another 10m, left, down 3 steps, 10m, right, along 6m, there's your room.

I rarely goto the cinema as it costs the same as a nearly new ford fiesta, however when I dingo it’s so empty I can’t imagine many folk bothering with the reservation

Really frustrating as a young family to see the cost of a cinema trip

But I'm not quite sure I get your rant, cinema has some normal seats and some nicer seats (which presumably cost more to buy and they can't fit as many in the cinema) so you get a choice of buying a cheap seat or the pricier one but you'd like to buy the cheap seats and sit in the fancy ones for the same price? Doesn't seem like the cinema is doing anything particularly terrible or unusual.

I know it's available. It's just a dick move in my opinion to decide that you want to see something for free that cost a load of time and money. I'd say either watch at the cinema, wait till it comes out on streaming or just don't watch it if don't want to pay for it.

I have lots of hypocrisy myself on similar things but it's where I stand on this one topic.

Don't recall that at all, sounds bargainous!

Local Vue cinema is about £5 a ticket now which seems perfectly reasonable. There is an independent cinema nearby which is £19 for the cheapest seats. Plus a £2.50 booking fee. Crazy!

If you go to a concert you pay based on where you sit and some seating areas have better views than others so they cost more.

I think his point is just that the cinema has never done this before - it was always a straight two tier pricing - standard seats or really comfy seats.

Now the cheap seats have been further subdivided:

I think your argument is flawed slightly as your always have choice in the price you pay.

We went to the VUE last night to watch the new Spiderman film and could sit in the premium seats at the back for 16 GBP, or slightly further forward at 10 GBP each. You pay more to watch it in 3D and in IMAX.

I remember the VUE had cheap seats on a Tuesday, but you are watching to watch one of the most popular films this year, on school holidays when I suspect they can fill the seats at standard pricing.

Given cinemas are struggling financially, can they afford to keep offering cheap tickets?

I don't know about "controversial" but it's startling

Given how basically nobody goes to the cinema anymore and it's hugely expensive, you'd think they'd be encouraging more people in, not charging more for something as simple (and reasonably inconsequential) as choosing your seat.

It smacks of money-grabbing, frankly.

I'd be surprised if cinemas remain much longer in the big scheme of things - surely it'll all just migrate online.

Yes, turnstiles at the entrance to the screens where you had to scan your paper ticket you had printed (no smartphones back then), you could take any food into the screening with no restriction (yep, pizzas, whatever), and the best thing was when they said the film started at 7pm to film started at 7pm with the trailers and adverts running before 7pm.

Choosing a seat is very important for me, and I will not go to a screening if I can't book a seat in a certain area.

I'm sick of the way every business tries to screw us with ever inventive ways of increasing charges/prices. Many are sneaky and underhand and rely on people's stupidity or inattention. It's bad enough the government do it to us.
