Gov Consulation on regulating firework sales

I always assumed this was going to happen sooner or later. At least it doesnt look like a proposal to ban all firework sales. The part that looks most ominous in the consultation is the proposal regarding banning the sale of multi shot "cakes".

Personally I've always enjoyed a garden firework display in the same way a gig at a smaller venue is more fun. To me, anti social use of fireworks is an enforcement/policing problem rather than a legislation problem.

I believe they recently banned selling all fireworks to unlicensed individuals in the Netherlands last year, and it resulted in a run on the firework shops before the ban came in.

Which is already illegal. It seems a shame that we end up with new blunter rules because existing rules are not kept/enforced.

We don’t need more rules and laws penalising reasonable folk when the rule breakers will carry on regardless.

Round here, we have fireworks at New year and bonfire night and a few other celebrations. E.g Diwali as well as the may balls in town. You can guarantee that the local Facebook group will immediately be triggered when a firework goes off at the “wrong” time……

I personally love a bit of fireworks fun - and there’s something great about getting your kids involved with a garden display.

Losing that would be a big old shame.

I think the way to stop these new rules coming in is to point out that banning fireworks penalises minorities who want to celebrate their culture.

I.e anyone that wants to ban fireworks is racist innit (Isn’t that the way to win a political argument now)

Bring back the good old days, with shop keepers selling single fireworks to school kids at lunch time.

I've enjoyed fireworks at home as a child and as a parent. However now that the tts have made home use as antisocial as it by setting them off in the early hours throughout the year I'd happily see them banned.

Never been one for banning stuff just because I don’t particularly like or agree with them but they have become a real anti social tool for mouth breathers..!!

Needs some regulation but not sure how you could without a total ban ,then the black market kicks in and rinse and repeat.

Whatever happens, obviously the police and justice system will plan robust punishments for white English people while implementing lesser or no responses for foreigners living in the UK celebrating their national day, a football win or their hatred of Israel, etc.

As with so many things, the sale and usage of fireworks has been abused. My family had newsagents shops many years ago and we gave up selling fireworks as they were so much hassle. What with having to keep them secure, the kids trying to buy them and the council sending girls in to try to buy them who were dressed up, and made up, to look old enough, to try to entrap shop owners into selling to kids.
We know which shops locally will sell them to children as young as 8, so do the police and the council but nothing is ever done about it. We also know families that will set fireworks off with any opportunity, and I don't mean on their property but thrown out into the street. Again they get away with it.
That said, it does seem a shame to punish everyone for a few people's behavior, that seems to be the way of the world these days.

Shouldn't be sold to the public.

Being able to impress your children in the garden impacts too many people/animals negatively.

I’m afraid this is typical of the weak liberal minded risk adverse society we have all become. Even if you ban the sale to the general public it will boost the black market if you know where to get fireworks illegally.

And yes I was a fully qualified pyro technician.

It’s not a problem round here and I’m in London, so presumably it’s just the more scummy areas that have a problem. Since they can already wheelie their surons while shoplifting and sticking their fingers up, I doubt more rules will make a difference.

Oh dear.

Of course there will be ways to obtain fireworks on the black market, but banning their general sale will reduce the level of pain inflicted by the selfish on society.

It's nothing whatsoever to do with being "risk averse" as the point being made is not about safety.
