Autographs.

Who collects them ,who have you got ?
Despite having done work within the film industry, tv studios ,music and motorsport, I have only ever asked one person for an autograph . My racing hero at the time ,Gerry Marshall , on the Vauxhall stand at Earls Court next to the brand new Big Bertha .
I have been in a position to gather hundreds of others but usually while I was working and it just didn't seem the correct thing to do .

Anyone I've had the opportunity to ask at the time was clearly not worth it.

I was hoping for the Queens signature on my royal commision but alas that's now the secretary.

I've got loads from when I was a kid, but now it's all selfies with them isn't it.

From back in the day I've got most of the 90s Touring Car drivers as I was a big fan, quite a few Manchester City footballers from the 90s/early 2000s, Jasper Carrott and Phil Cool who I met at Liverpool Airport, Nigel Mansell, Freddie Flintoff, Frank Worthington, Howard Keel, Gordon Banks, Robert Powell, Dennis Waterman and a load of others from a Charity Golf Tournament

Only Beckham, for my little brother who is a massive man u fan. This was in about 1998.

Oh and I got Jimmy Carr to sign my blank bank card after a gig a few years ago, for a laugh.

And the blur boys gave me a load of signed albums but only cos I'm mates with one of them, I didn't ask for them.

Passed the Hyatt in Birmingham about 10 years ago and noticed some autograph hunters were stood outside (and a Rolls Royce waiting).

I waited with them to see who it was and after a short wait Arnold Schwarzenegger walked out! He completely blanked all the autograph hunters (who were nearly all German and shouting "Arnold bitter......") and got straight in the Rolls Royce.

I later found out he was hosting his own event and amongst the various "packages" fans could be purchased you could also pay for an Autograph which was around £300-500 (which explains why he blanked the autograph hunters at the hotel!).

Felt sorry for the fans but it also seemed a bit desperate crying out for an autograph. I was desperate to say "Get to the chopper (or Rolls in this case)!" But I didn't have the balls and he probably hears it all the time.

I don’t really understand why you would want a famous person to write their name down for you. What do you then do with it?

Apart from a load of 2000s Barnsley FC players which I’m sure are worth little more than the paper recycling value.

Got Richie Richardson, Dickie Bird, Derek Randall and others at a Scarborough Cricket Festival charity game.

Then a couple my dad brought home for me from after dinner speakers, again 2000 ish - Geoff Boycott and Gordon Banks.

Not really into autographs (or bothering anyone slightly famous going about their day) but following the cricket theme I did meet and chat to Henry Blofeld outside a Scarborough guest house. Lovely man who gave me and my late dad and grandad many hours of pleasure on TMS, but I was on the way back from a run so nothing to get an autograph on.

I ve only ever waited for two, by the same person; signed copies of Alan Partridge s I Partridge at Waterstones in Norwich and a few years later got a copy of Nomad signed by him as well.

The third was more poignant; we went to see Roger Moore on his theatre tour and during the break my then-wife sneaked off to the merch stall and bought me a signed copy of his autobiography. He died the followng year. He was great - what a life.

I generally skip them but many years ago for my son's 16th birthday I had some F1 people sign a birthday card for him- Jackie Stewart, Mika Haakinen, Damon Hill and Eddie Jordan:



I had a few cars signed:
Wolfgang Porsche signed my 991RS at his house, while Vic Elford and Hurley Haywood did the same for my 997RS:

I met Henry Cooper when I was about 8 or 9 when he and my Dad were playing in a Pro/Am golf match. He was a big name in those days, but had loads of time for me. I have his autograph in an album, next to a signed photo of Pans People (young 'uns will need Google for them!!)

Back in the 80s my dad's Royal Warrant was signed by the then secretary for defence.
I didn't realise it was actually a royal thing in an official frame ,he never had it on display ,tucked away in a wardrobe along with his medals ,according to him one for 22 years of undetected crime and one for mistaken identity in the Malaysia emergency. On retirement he was a Warrant Officer, Senior Bandmaster Royal Air Force Music Service ,32 years service . I was very proud of him ,and realised he was a very talented man

I've got a picture of Thrust SSC signed by Richard Noble and Andy Green. I've also got a drawing of the Lloyds building in London signed by Richard Rogers (The architect)

Walt Cunningham (Apollo 7) and Al Worden (Apollo 15) from events that I went to and met them.

Also the wonderful Kit WIlliams, he of "Masquerade" fame. I emailed him to ask if I could send my copy to be signed, and ended up getting an invite to his studio open day where he signed it in person.

Steve Redgrave's signature on framed a photo - present from my wife, as I raced against him and Matt a couple of times when I was a student...was a big fan of them both at the time.

When I was 18 I went to see Al Murray and he was signing autographs on merchandise after the show, I decided the merchandise was a bit too pricy for me at the time so I waited in the queue and asked if he could sign the ticket, he took the piss then signed it ‘you tight bd… Al Murray’ made me laugh when I looked at it later on.

I took a copy of Motor Sport to Goodwood a few years ago and got a suitable autograph

I've also got Andy Green's, I keep it inside the front cover of the Thrust SSC book that he wrote the foreword for.

I've got Nigel Mansell's too, my all time hero, which I got in the late 80s when he went to Ferrari. I just wrote a fan letter to him as a young kid, addressed it to "Nigel Mansell, Isle of Man", he wrote back a few weeks later with a signed Ferrari postcard. Have that framed on the wall in my garage.
