I was chatting to a friend and he said his mate wasn't going to a party because he had social exhaustion. WTF? Has anyone heard of this? Is it new thing or is it just a load of crap! Sounds like bks to me.

As someone who is an introvert, I completely get what 'social exhaustion' is.

It's the process of avoiding people who don't understand what social exhaustion is.

that was me a few weeks ago after a weekend meeting my son's girlfriend's family.

Down to London with my wife and her elderly parents.
Sort them out in a hotel then out for dinner.

A house party on Saturday night, after a day dicking around town.
A long Sunday lunch with a group.

When I got back after three days of it I could quite happily have holed up in a bunker for a week or two.

Since I started considering the idea of a "social battery" I've been a lot happier as a functioning introvert. (My own term.)

It helped me understand why I don't want to do anything except walk he dogs on my own after work. This is a great way for me to re-charge.

I'm fully aware that different people have different ways of working, so none of this a judgement on anyone else.

Sounds like yet another Americanism. You don’t need a reason or justification just say no.

See also "Social Bubble".

Given that people are different, it also works both ways. Some feel the need to go out with company to recharge their bubble.
Weird!

Social exhaustion, absolutely, its a thing

I have always had it, my gf, no, on visits to friends she can stay and chat for 9hrs straight, me, I have had enough after 1hr.

Another from her is, at parties - "you ready to go now" ( I was ready when we was on the way to it ) biggrin

I gave up being sociable about 20 years ago, I put up with visits from family once or twice a year. I am much happier with just me and the wife, luckily she is the same.

Suspect it means the same as "peopled out". Or "fk off and leave me alone, I've had enough of everyone's bullst".

I can definitely relate to it. It's a good term.

The 'Christmas night out' email was sent out this week for the annual office party. I honestly couldn't think of anything worse - peak social exhaustion.
