carry a hanky?
yeah, but when you've got a bout of the greenies, the last thing you want to do is make a collection of them in your pocket. i must add that i normally find a drain to dispose of such nasties... when no one is looking of course.

I spit if I'm running or playing football, does that make me common? mind you, would try not to do it in front of ladys or kids to be fair and onto grass or something, seeing spit on a path is pretty grim.
I don't really understand why people do it even playing sport, I've never found a build up of saliva when I've played Hockey, Netball or Cycling?? however, I am in this instance talking about those awful people who make that dog rasp sound & then spit on a street.

it's cos they is 'ard, innit. geeza.
never found the need to do it myself either, but it does prove useful as an instant way of identifying chavs when their fake burbury and hoodies are in the wash.

For real quality coughing, hawking and gobbing onto the pavement you have only to go to China. The streets are awash with what are known locally as bright green "Shanghai Oysters" (AKA a docker's omlette).
Having said that, gobbing when playing a physical sport is acceptable, not to say necessary although it should be done as discreetly as possible and never in the direction of another player. And it's probably better not to play if you're suffering from bronchitus.

Spitting when playing sport is to clear your mouth/throat as much as possible to facilitate the faster/heavier breathing when playing. It does make it easier to breathe hard.

Those sound like quite girly pursuits....

Something I noticed at school was the 'hard' kids from rough areas always had a plentiful supply of thick grobbers to dispose of, but the normal kids never needed to. Strange.

Poor manners aside - it could be smoking or health related. it's a bit like farting - we all do it (escpecially if you're on a high-fibre diet like myself) but those with manners tend to hide the fact.
