Doggie Dilemma

Unfortunately I have had to make the heartbreaking decision to let my beautiful Chocolate Lab Max go to a new home. Before I am crucified & told what I already know that a dog is for life I'd like to explain that he was bought as a puppy 18 months ago to be our baby as my wife had lost 2 babies 1 to an ectopic pregnancy & 1 to a molar pregnancy & it was looking bleak on the baby front.
Since then we have been fortunate to become parents to a beautiful baby boy & as I work away from home all week it has become too much for my wife to try to look after both. The main issue is the fact that we cannot put baby on the floor to play at anytime due to dog fur & the fact that Max pinches his toys & runs off with them.
What I will not do is leave him with RSPCA as I want to know that he has gone to a good home. So does anyone know anybody who fits the bill or anywhere to try?
He is soft as ste & fantastic with other dogs & children & will be 2 in November. He is a full pedigree & a perfect family pet for the slightly older children as he will knock over toddlers playing as anyone who knows choccy labs will tell you they don't stop being puppies until their about 5!

surprised that fur s that much of a problem with a lab, you should try golden retrievers, they are fur factories!

Have you tried talking to the breeder? Sometimes people who get one dog regret not getting two so it may be that people who took one of his siblings may take him

Your baby will not explode on contact with dog fur, nor will the baby grow and extra head on contact with dog drool.

I am a volunteer for a dog rescue. I have contacts with Labrador Rescue. The rescue I'm involved with and lab rescue are foster home based rather than kennel based. I have a foster dog with me at the moment. There are a lot of other rescues that are the same.

Is Max neutered? I ask as unfortunately I am aware that there are less than scrupulous people out there that are very good at purporting to be a loving home, but will take him to use for puppy farming. I would also not give anyone his papers - no rescues do.

Best place to try if you are going to rehome him yourself is: http://www.dogpages.org.uk/forums/index.php?showfo... You can start a thread on there. IMHO it is wise to get rescue back up. They can ensure a full homecheck and back up for life. Rescues are very experienced in matching dogs to the right homes. If anything happened and Max had to again be rehomed, the rescue will take care of him.

Don't feel too bad, I know someone who kicked their dog out onto the streets, hoping it would run off. When it didn't they phoned the RSPCA to say there was a stray dog hanging around outside their house.

I am a helper at a dog rescue and those stories infuriate me.It takes half an hour to find a dog home.

My parents lost their golden lab Mak due to old age a few months back, and recently had a very unexpected loss of their 4 year old springer Bonnie (they are not very happy with the vet at all, its a long story but rest assured they go to a far superior place now), leaving just her brother Clyde.

I haven't asked if they will be getting another dog yet, but I imagine they will as my Mum is an avid dog lover and sure she will start thinking Clyde is lonely, lol, plus they have always had at least 2. They live very close to the beach and the old dear only works part time so lots of long dog walks will be had . Ill be going to see them Sunday, if you want me to ask them let me know and i'll see what they say.

Why would you not want your kid to grow up with animals? Would help the immune system, and teach him to get along with the other inhabitants of the planet. I was brought up with dogs and cats, and would have had it no other way.

Hi,
if its any help. I have an 11 month old and 2 crazy dogs.
we fitted laminate floor as its easy to clean, would that not be an option?
Also a little dog hair wont hurt the little monster.......

With the stealing of toys that will soon stop

"no" or "leave it" usually works well with the toy issue. I believe a hoover (cleaner operated if necessary) tends to do the trick with the hair

i am sure in time she could manage a baby and a pet dog.
i do realise that the 1st child kinda blows you away and is very hard work, but if all three can get into a routine the child and the dog will have a relationship for life.
i do understand where your wife is coming from and also your hurt.
keep the dog.
and the wife and the child.

Agree, didn't do my three children any harm, eating, kissing licking their pet golden lab became the norm.
