I have just had a friendly word with a lady who was using her 3-4 year old child to post Avon books through our letter box. (she agreed with me)
My dog like most dogs enjoys chewing the mail, he's a friendly dog but when it comes to the mail he likes nothing more than pulling it through the letter box. In the morning when the post is due we keep the dog in the lounge. (although postmen must be trained not to stick their fingers through the letter box)
I know some people will say its my responsibility to keep the dog away from the letter box but majority of people wont be so vigilant and to use a small child for letter dropping I think its dangerous.
Whats your view ?

You could put one of those cage type things around it that collect the post.

They look st, though!

If your dog is liable to do such things, put one of those cages to catch the post on the back of the letterbox. saves your post, and the persons fingers.

From recollection of my childhood paper rounds, they are a pain.. but better than losing fingers

I agree. My dogs will bark at the postman but have never bitten at him. However a local councillor recently got bitten while posting her party bumpf through local letter boxes and it made local(and not very exciting) news. The local weekly rag printed it up saying that owners should prevent dogs from attacking postmen, etc at their own front doors.

My opinion is that anyone who sticks their had through my letterbox gets what they deserve. I've heard of people being attacked by vicious letter box flaps before and complaining about it. Stupid if you ask me.

Ring the Avon Lady on the number which I imagine is stamped on the catalogue.

Inform her you are removing her "Assumed right of access to your property".

Stipulate that if she breaches that instruction any "damage" will be her responsibility.

We have a child gate in the hall that stops the dog chewing the post but mainly stops the dozy sod from wandering into the road.

Pow!
