Seriously where did this originate from? i saw it on the simpsons as a child and didnt understand then and dont understand it anymore now! Were our teeth that bad long ago that it just some how latched on till the end of time?

Ive just been on COD5 on the xbox and some french canadian ( yep, the gayest of the gayest type of people) bloke comes on and starts ranting to some other english bloke about how weve got crap teeth. Now as you know they do the best english accents ever known in life, the just would not shut up absolutely adimant that he was right in everyway possible.

and my teeth are in a pretty fking good state btw

So , someone explain why it gets brought up?

Because compared to Americans we do have crap teeth, Austin Powers of course has a lot to answer for in making Americans aware of this.

It was a based on the comparison between the clean, unnaturally white, cosmetically enhanced smiles of the Americans with their expensive orthodontists producing immaculate full of teeth smiles (for those who could afford it) and the crooked teeth exhibited by our politicians and the Royal Family twenty years or so ago.

Have a look at pictures of the Queen Mother and Julia Roberts as an extreme contrast.

A French Canadian, wow, flappy head and a French accent.

Now I can't help sing the french canadian song from South park ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAbEgr1A37s )

Seriously though I think that every country has stereotypes of other countries, French = hairy armpits, Americans = fat, Germans = organised, Russians = Alcoholics.

Its not true, just a mass generalisation, That and the fact we dont spend a billion pounds a year each on teeth whitening products.

Hah... And Top Gear and the BBC or just a quick visit. I always thought it was a stereotype but I really was shocked at the condition of the average persons teeth.

The same reason we think Americans are overweight, loud mouthed, illiterate ingrates.

Because most Americans are fat and have nothing else to complain about plus they never (most) leave the USA and still think Europe is one big island with the UK part of itfurious

They think this because it was in one episode of The Simpsons, which as you know is definitive and any Brit with good teeth is therefore an error in reality.

I believe that overall We (the Brits) have better teeth overall. Hollywood smiles are pretty much that. An unnaturally whitened and straightened ideal. Looking at other areas of the states there are some disgusting mouths out there. Perhaps the best gauge is that in person most Brits are mistaken for Australians who don't have a bad rap on teeth. That's another story on how Americans think we speak.

I think it stems from the 2nd world war period when a lot of Americans were stationed in the West Country and yes Cider does rot your teeth.

The present generation of Americans uses TV and Films as a generalisation of life so what they see in the movies and TV is true. So if a film like the life of Brian is shown then as it’s a British film this is what all the brits teeth look like.

But then we do call them all fat and stupid and that also is not true but there are 300 million of them compared to 60 million of us (figures may slightly vary)

Because they are obsessed with cosmetic surgery and any tiny defect in the teeth has to be corrected with veneers and caps?

Us brits may have crap teeth, but at least they're real!

No one seems to have spotted that a French Canadian is not an American. Just say 'remember Quebec'...

Different cultures, different priorities.

In Britain we had free or nearly free national health dentistry for 50 years. The emphasis was on dental health, so the vast majority of the population have healthy teeth.

In America dentistry is private and expensive. So the customers who pay demand good cosmetics and the dentistry profession there is happy to push this and take the money.

However quite a high percentage of Americans can't afford dentistry so they have bad teeth. The reality is that Brits have, on average, healthier teeth than Americans. However amongst good wage earners Americans will have teeth that look better on average.

Yeah the Quebecois have a real chip on their collective shoulder when it comes to the United Kingdom and Canada. I 'met' some on holiday and when asked which nation they represented in the world quiz they stated Quebec and got a little shirty when the rep insisted they must represent Canada.

To the O.P - I've had a American on COD4 repeating in my earhole 'drink your tea, drink your tea' when he heard I was British. I'm glad he reminded me, Earl Grey doesn't taste very good when cold.

there is some truth in this - I live and work in america 50% of my time and I'd say the average condition of teeth here is significantly poorer than in the UK...while the NHS is a money-wasting pile of ste, the free child dentistry for the last few decades has done great things and wherever this stereotype comes from, it couldn't be further from the truth
