I work opposite one. Not 3 months ago, they had a company round to remove the existing surround of a cash machine (approx 7' x 4', made of blue perspex or similar) and replace it. I'm not sure why. Yesterday, they removed it again and replaced it with a yet further identical one, identical except it says "free cash withdrawals" instead of "free cash machine". How the hell, in the current climate and given the problems with that bank in particular, can such complete waste of money be approved and sanctioned. The guys sat in a van by it most of the afternoon, and it took them about half an hour to do, so you know it cost at least a few hundred £'s and you know they are probably doing it across the country. If I was a customer, I would be demanding an explanation. Maybe as a taxpayer I should demand an explanation anyway? Why are we bailing out banks who then waste our money.

People probably complained that the sign was misleading and that they expected to get free cash from the machine.

How depressing that this is probably the case.

Maybe the machine had been tampered with and in its current location wasnt covered greatly enough by cctv cameras.

I'm sure you would be moaning louder if you had been ripped off and they hadnt done anything about it.

Yeah, that would be a really logical argument bearing in mind the works they did. What are you talking about? They replaced a perspex surround, they didn't install CCTV cameras!

Shirely you as a pedant would praise actions such as these?

But what is the technical semantic difference? Does free cash withdrawals infer the same thing? Either way it is a shocking waste of money bearing in mind they just replaced it 3 months ago and have now done it again.

st, I was planning my retirement around those free cash machines.

The next question is, when they realise that "free cash withdrawls" is similarly ambiguous as it could suggest that you can withdraw free cash, will they rehire the same focus group at however many thousands of pounds an hour to reword it again, or will they have learned their lesson and hire a new focus group?

Indeed.

In the real world recession based decision making involving expenditure on new equipment must have a pay back in THIS financial year. i.e 8 months left.

I applied 2 years ago for a job as a 6 Sigma lean Black Belt in RBS, and the RC sent me a 10 page document listing 'staff benefits' on top of a fecking amazing salary.

Lets see?
We have a civil service which is 99% waste.

We have gummint Wallahs basically stealing from us on expenses

We have Royal Parasites occupying 2000 times the housing space of the US presidential administration

We have 3 or 4 quangos for every one we need

We spend a few quid bailing out the gummint by subsidising a few banks without prosecuting a single member of the FSA and all of a sudden this is the issue of the day?

FFFS We have roads to build, sandalists to shoot, civil servants to sack and local gummint empires to burn.

We have green lies to combat and now the morons are offering subsidies for electric cars and if we take the subsidy up we will swamp the grid and become like bloody Africa with part time power....

One more key question, did they remember to put the apostrophe in "withdrawl's"?

No, it is not being used in the possessive case ...

ETA: It is free cash withdrawal, not withdrawls! wink

The OP said withdrawls. "Free cash withdrawl" would make slightly more sense in that it is the process of cash withdrawl which is free, but still a bit ambiguous as to whether you can withdraw cash for free or withdraw free cash, and adds an element of ambiguity as to whether the machine, perspex surrounding and all, is only useful for one singular free cash withdrawl, all subsequent withdrawls being either impossible or not free.

What they should have had is a simple, snappy sign saying "Automated bank teller, the use of which for purposes of withdrawing cash from your bank account will not incur a charge from the owners or operators of this machine except for the debit of the sum withdrawn from your bank account"

I dont work in the cash machine industry but it wouldnt suprise me if it had cost touching 10 grand to supply and fit. I work in construction and the costs for stuff like that are astromomical.. Ive seen commercial customers pay in the region of 60 grand for what is in effect 10 kitchen cabinets with locks and glass in the doors and a bit of worktop on top..
