An odd request, but I was wondering if anyone here had been to Studio 54 in New York during its hey day from 1977 - 1980?

I'm fascinated by the sheer level of debauchery of the place, and it would be great to have some first hand insight.

Sadly, I am too young to have gone (and probably not cool enough even if I had been born at the right time).

Cheers

Yes, let's pretend the past never happened, best for everyone, afterall it's not as if we are all grown-ups is it?

If this was the internet we could discuss this stuff freely...

No chance he was referring to the club as being shut down, is there?

Maybe?? Perhaps he was, but who might think it was still open from "its hey day of 1977-1980"?
And the OP didn't ask if it was still open, just if anyone had any recollections from that period.

A place that holds a level of fascination for me too, just missed out on it, if I'd been 10 years older I could have gone there and the Wigan Casino.

Hey ho.

Don't think you would have got in with that attitude!

Looked cool, and I hate disco.

New Studio 54 club is in the MGM Grande in Las Vegas. Very nice, though prob not quite the same as the real thing would have been back in it's day!

I think it was only open initially for just over a year, so '77 to '78 sometime...

I believe it reopened in 1980 or so but was it not different owners/not as much fun?

Anyway, pretty impressive to have garnered such a reputation in a year! Sounds like it would have been ace hehe

Track down and but a copy of Frank Broughton and Bill Brewster's Last Night A DJ Saved My Life.

It's a facinating book that explains the rise of the DJ and popular music culture beginning in the 30's, I believe, to modern day and covers just about every major genre you can think of.

I read it about five years ago so some of the details are very fuzzy, but there's a section dedicated to the Disco era and I think Studio 54 is mentioned. If it is there will certainly be some anecdotes from people around at the time.

Yes there is, but it would be good to converse with someone who was actually there.

I used to go to the Hacienda regularly, and often filmed the bands there.

Now it has been replaced by an apartment block.

Lucky you! Alas, I am slightly too young to have made it there.

I did make the pilgrimage to the site of the Hacienda whilst in Manchester recently for a meeting. I almost felt the hairs on the back of my neck go up when I was there - the ghosts of music past.

There is a good video on YouTube where someone walks through the Hacienda during the day. I can't post a link just now as I an posting from my phone but I shall post it up soon.
