The lastminute.com Top Secret hotels are a good bet, there is a forum thread that reveals the actual hotel for some of the descriptions:

A colleague of mine uses them all the time.

For a long time i used www.travelrepublic.co.uk , price much lower than the others (lastminute, expedia etc), but recently I discovered asda travel , they were £50 cheaper than anywhere else for the same hotel. These were bookings in Europe but they also book hotels in the UK.
Having said that, I booked a hotel in Birmingham last week and asda were cheapest again BUT I double checked on the hotels own website and they had a special deal on that saved me 25%. So find yourself a hotel through on of the travel agents but check the direct price before you book
