Tesco home delivery - how fast?

I've never ordered my groceries online, but need to get a lot of stuff in for a party.
Can someone tell me how soon after placing an online order Tesco will actually deliver? Can you get it that day or is it a case of booking a slot days/weeks ahead?
Ta,

You book a slot, then order your food and invariably some of it doesnt turn up. Use Ocado if they deliver in your area, miles better. Can someone tell me how soon after placing an online order Tesco will actually deliver? Can you get it that day or is it a case of booking a slot days/weeks ahead?

Agreed. Tesco always seem to leave stuff out, Ocado rarely do. It depends on when you book and when you want delivery. If you book on a weekday for next-day delivery, that can normally be arranged. If you want Friday-Sunday delivery, you might need to book a couple of days in advance - although next-day may well also still be available (depends on how busy they are). If you want delivery just before Christmas, you generally need to book over a week in advance.

The 'shopping' done on your behalf before its delivery is normally done by Tesco employees who clearly still live with Mum.
Some of the 'substitutions' (-what they give you when they can't find what you ordered) are laughable.
As are some of the things that are delivered that aren't shown as substitutions and aren't what you ordered either. Some of the 'substitutions' (-what they give you when they can't find what you ordered) are laughable.
However Sainsbury's currently hold my record for most ridiculous substitution: I order lemon squash, they deliver lemon bleach. Nice.
Rarely get subsitutions or stuff missing from Tesco - you do know you can specify what to be given instead?
If you place your order before 11am, you can quite often get a delivery slot for that evening, book it at checkout. Otherwise choosing when you want it to be delivered is your first step, so you can have it as soon as you like.
OT - Waitrose have just introduced no delivery fees on home delivery orders over £50!

Been using Tesco online for a couple of years now (weekly) and never once had a problem. Must vary from store to store. Some of the 'substitutions' (-what they give you when they can't find what you ordered) are laughable.
The guy who delivers ours (and has done since we started) certainly doesn't live with his mum. In fact, i'd be surprised if his mum was still alive he's that old.
Do be careful when ordering for events. Back in my student days I worked in a call centre that took calls for Waitrose Wine. One particuarly fine Saturday had a phone call to say that someones wine had not arrived. It had been ordered for a wedding, later that day. Big Problem as we had no systems or contacts to check anything - all we normally did was take orders which were faxed through for Monday morning.
Ended up throwing ourselves on the mercy of the nearest local store manager who was not happy as he could not work out if or how he was going to get paid!

On a delivery note I was approaching a roundabout 2 weeks ago while a Tesco delivery van was going round and the side door flew open throwing baskets of groceries everywhere... It made my day! havent laughed so much since, the poor driver!
Unsurprising given the way our local Tesco delivery vans all seem to be driven by nutters with a death wish.

The drivers are that; drivers.
The shelf-stackers/ checkout people et al, are the ones who do your shopping; and tend be slighty wet around the ears.
Have used both sainsbury's and tesco's - never again. Far, far too many plastic bags to re-use/ recycle/ throw away etc, open wine with

Substitues are indeed laughable.
Plus the process of point and click is too easy, and I end up buying more than I want. I enjoy being rammed by old ladies who have no trolly control, as it ensures I hurry the uff up and leave the place.
Waitrose does a Home Entertainment line, you order it all online and then they will deliver, free of charge, BUT you need to order 5 days in advance:
