I am on the look out for some new prescription glasses and was wondering which brands were good ones? I currently wear Oakleys, but would like a smarter pair.

I am really not convinced by the likes of Prada, Diesel, Armani, etc... it just seems as though they are sticking there names on everything!

They are however that is what's on offer. Prada can be nice and understated as can Armani.

Timmy Mallet can offer some good advice too, google him for his number.

I've worn frame less Silhouette glasses for several years now. Very pleased with them. I'm more of the "rather it doesn't look like you are wearing them" camp rather than the "large black plastic frame with thick arms with the name printed down them" camp.

Vision Express is crap for properly good quality frames though. As someone earlier said, these days there's a lot of good designer names being plonked on really crap frames. You need to find a good quality opticians like these boys :-

I've been happy with Shoc frames for the last few years.

If you're anywhere near Brum then Eye-Q is the place to go.

Quite tragically mine are Gucci, not that you'd know unless you examine them very closely (I had to look) worn them every day for four years now, sat on them, fell asleep in them, bent all over the place, they are still fine.

Typically all glasses look terrible on me as I'm a freak with one ear about 1/2 and inch higher than the other so they always look wonky! smile

Police does some nice and reasonably priced ones. And even though I have no time for their clothes, Prada's specs are pretty good.

My last pair were Gucci; currently Ermenegildo Zegna. Both produce quality, understated frames without huge brand badges down the side.

I bought my last pair of frames from Vision Express, Paul Smith ones. They had by far the best selection on my local high street.

It depends on what you want to spend.
Don't forget most of these "designer" brands don't have a lot to do with their spectacles range. Prada, Gucci etc make clothes not frames.
So stick to people who actually design (and wear) spectacles.
Silhouette, Lindberg, Minima and Oakley make eyewear first and foremost.
They don't tend to be the cheapest ranges though. Tom Davies are nice but really not cheap.
Anything from a big chain is likely to be last years anyway if that bothers you.

I know that... the whole purpose of this thread was to find other brands that i might not have heard of! smile

I currently wear Oakley prescription glasses, but would like another set that are a bit smarter.

Matt,
Try Lindberg, Face a Face, Starck, Oliver Peoples, Minima, Alain Mikli to start with
Some will be a bit wacky - Mikli and Starck for instance but the Lindberg rimless is lovely and some of the F a F is really different.
The Tag Heuer range goes against the grain a little but is well designed and made.

My wife was not surprised to find my new glasses are Jaguar frames!
