My other half's 21st is coming up and she wants a new iPod. I'm thinking 2 birds with one stone as Apple offer a free engraving service. I would go for something simple like 'Happy 21st Birthday'. Nothing too OTT.

What are people's opinions. A good idea or tacky?

"She shall have music wherever she goes..."

That's what I had engraved on the Nano I bought my mum for christmas.

Soemthing like that would be cool IMO. A bit different.

You'll only get 4 years maybe a bit more out of an ipod, perhaps something that will last a while longer?

Why would it? Apple provide the engravements, I wouldn't have thought they then say, sorry no warranty with this iPod biggrin

Would have thought an ipod for a 21 year old is great present. If (as someone above said, it only lasts 4 years - source pls....) then that's longer than most other presents would last.

I think it would be nice, but unless she keeps it in a case the metal gets scratched to buggery, well mine has at least.

It doesnt void the warranty no. It just means you cannot return it after 28 days like most things if you for some reason don't want it. If there is a fault with it then they replace it quickly with a non engraved one or you wait a week or so and they deliver you your engraved one. I know because this happened to me.

There's no warranty on Girlfriends I'm afraid.

God if there was there would be no need for marriage!

Try getting 'Works with Windows Vista' on it wink
Turns out they won't engrave just anything on them.

Go for it. It will be great at the time and that is what metters.

However iPod works on a planned obsolescence business model with annual updates, so it won't have any lasting resonance. After two years it will be perceived as a piece of old junk.

For a 21st don't you want something more, uh, personal and meaningful than an Ipod?

This is actually why the engraving service is offered. I currently work for a large supplier of household electrical goods. They have just started offering engraving on laptops ordered online. One fo the great spin-offs for the sales force is that engraved goods cannot be returned on a whim, they are a guaranteed sale !!
