I'm trying to buy something online but there is no way past the page where I can 'volenteer' to register for another thing that makes purchases more complicated.

If you haven't signed up to the service previously, is there not a small link at the lower right hand corner of the 'verified by' pop-up to let you bypass the verified section?

I saw it while purchasing some items before I had signed up.

Maybe it's compulsory now though.

Mastercard has exactly thesame system. That said, it's not difficult to use and it protects you the banks.

The problem I found was I couldn't actually register. Rang up the bank and found they had my details wrong, hence the correct ones didn't match when I was putting them in.

Worked fine since then, but still a pain.

Maybe worth giving the helpline a ring.

Unless you have actually enrolled by entering your details, you should be able to skip it, like has been said - needless it'll be a smaller button, but it's not strictly mandatory yet.
Verified by Visa and Mastercard SecureCard are exactly the same thing, just a different name for the service.

I'm not defending it, I think it's a pos too

btw though it's marketed to be good news for you the cardholder, in reality its to protect the banks/merchants - if the merchants use it then the liability of any discrepancies moves to the bank rather than the merchants - hence the high take up rate on a service that's not yet mandatory

Yep, its doing my head in too.

I got that a couple of weeks ago, no way round it, joined up, then next time got my password wrong (which i made up the time before) and the damn thing locked me out of using that card.

Havent called the bank yet.

Ahh you have made a basic error there my grasshopper.

If you don't know your password you just say you haven't verified it yet and set it up again.

How safe is that?!

I have "reset" it many times after getting the password wrong.

Got three Visa cards (two credit, one debit). Signed up for Verified and saved password on Roboform. Next time Verified didn't want to know the saved password so did a new one and all was well. Third time same problems but I know this time I was using a different card.

My conclusion - Visa system looks at each card independently so you need a different password for each card

As said the info is so public knowledge that it is a total waste of time; just a wallpapering of deniablity for the providers.

Expert on card payments? Wall papering how? Its a method used to add an extra step of protection, register with VBV and it helps against online card fraud where someone might have all your details but not your password for VBV.
