By my countless other thread you may have got the impression I have bought a house / had a wage cut and had to sell the mini. redface

welcome to the real world me!

anyway I need to furnish the house for cheap. Been looking in the Argos catalogue and all seems fairly decent at a good price. I know I could get much better for more but cant afford it.

Am I missing something or is Argos not a bad place to shop. Obvious stuff I will shop around for cheaper and will be making the Ikea trip Monday smile

I used to think Argos was an absolute stehole??

Bought a desk and a couple of sets of shelves from there.

Desk fell apart.

Shelves ugly and bowing but they still function, just about.

False economy, I think.

if you stick to known brands it can be cheap, the soul-destroying purchasing process and fellow patrons usually put me off to be honest

I've bought a side board, dining table & chairs, bookshelf and Wardrobe from the Argos Additions and all are pretty stylish and haven't fell apart and show no signs of doing so.. although they have only been up since September.

Some of it has lasted for many years in my office and also mum's spare room. When furnishing my own place I chose Ikea. Similar pricing and a touch better looking.

The wood furniture is rubbish, falls apart

Glass/alu stuff appears ok to me

Ever thought of checking ebay instead?

There are some right snobs on herelaugh

If you're looking to furnish your first place, then there is nothing wrong with Argos stuff to be honest. Saying that though, you can get a lot of Argos stuff off Ebay for a lot less. Alternatively, just look on Ebay for what you need (wardrobes, drawers etc) & go from there. I've bought furniture off Ebay for £1 before now which was perfectly good, in fact some of it is fantastic, however it might be not the latest fashion or all be matching but I can guarantee that whatever you buy now you'll replace in a couple of years anyway.

Or you could always hock yourself up to your eyeballs in debt just to please people;)

My Mrs made me buy this sofa from dfs. It's only 18 months old and it's falling apart.

I've no probs with some IKEA stuff.

18 months is pretty good for DFSbiggrin

Ikea sofas are actually really good for the money but don't get a bed from there as it won't be a standard sizemad

Argos is false economy mate. No matter how many times I have bought something and said "Oh, it's only a shelf/chest of draws/light blah blah blah, they always break. Always. Ikea is the way for the basics, or second hand.

1) Go to B&Q
2) Buy Saw
3) Buy Hammer/Screwdriver
4) Buy Screws/Nails
5) Buy Wood

6) Make Funiture!

Much cheaper, much more satisfying and not that difficult, I did it when I needed a new BBQ and I ended up with this:
