There is something deeply satisfying about making fire without matches or a lighter.

Yesterday I built a driftwood fire on the beach and cooked the family's lunch on it.

Yes, it took ages and I got accused of playing at Ray Mears.

Worth it.

Highly recommnended!

Fire bow or flint and striker? Either way, whilst it is a nice skill to have, it's mostly useless these days. 20p lighters have made it a skill of the past. frown

Only last night when I was watching Mr Hollywood (Bear Grylls) prance about and it reminded me, I say to my housemate, "its been a long time since I last made a fire, I miss it".

It is a very manly pursuit, and I have fond memories of fires in woods, on beaches etc.

Magnesium is cheating. You need to go and dig up some flint to feel proper manly. Although the wife might complain at the extra time involved. hehe

Just rub 2 boy scouts together!

I've just won a bet. Lit the barbecue without matches or firelighters. Easy!!!......Some kitchen towel covered in cooking oil, cover most of it in charcoal, then used my glasses to focus the sun on it...No Problem!! smile

You cheater biggrin

Bit of twine (fashioned from wood pulp strands), some kindling and a pointy stick are all you need.

(and a fair amount of time and some considerable swearing)

Don't survivor types carry waterproof matches with them anyway?

The Australian Tourist Board would like to thank you for not visiting their country.

Not really - how many can you carry and what do you do when they run out?

I would have a pack of 100 lighters from the £ shop. And if I used them all then rescue is hopeless anyway.

Apparently you get 25 in a small tube. Probably best not to want a cigarette.

It's good that they provide a candle so even if you're in the middle of nowhere you can relax. Shame they don't provide a CD with whale song, though.
