Collectables, classics, sought after items...
Discussion
The recent thread about future classics got me thinking. What item (car, watch, toy, musical instrument, piece of furniture, etc) did you buy brand new (or virtually brand new) thinking that it would be a future classic or highly collectable and:
1) it made you a tidy profit (feel free to say how much)
2) you took a massive loss and regret wasting your money on the item (feel free to say how much you lost)?
Not done any such speculative dealings myself but a business acquaintance bought a brand new Elise S1 back in the late 90s for about £25k and held it a bit too long to make any money out of it. I assume he had a lot of fun, anyway!

I have lots of things I have bought, and not sold on yet. These are my pension, but are worth more now than then.
My god father did however buy a Ferrari for around £60k. He was scared to drive it, as it was going to be a fantastic investment.....
He sold it for £24K three years later
Edited to add a small amount of return

Which of your items are already quite collectable? Tell us more. My god father did however buy a Ferrari for around £60k. He was scared to drive it, as it was going to be a fantastic investment.....

Ouch. Which Ferrari was it?

Im hoping for his sake you missed a 'k' off the 24, at least. My god father did however buy a Ferrari for around £60k. He was scared to drive it, as it was going to be a fantastic investment.....

Well, I admit, a lot are antiques bought well.
I have a good collection of collectable limited art works and sculptures, some are now worth 3 or 4 times the original retail price, even though I paid trade
Also, quite a good small wine cellar, filled with wines bought with advice, that are now worth a bit more than I paid.
The last items I have bought and sold with tidy profits are guitars, although these have been secondhand and I have tickled them up a bit. None the less, on a £500 investment, a return of £800 isn't bad.

Technically I didn't buy 'em, but thanks to having a Natwest account as a kid I ended up with the full set of the Natwest piggy banks.
They're apparently worth a couple of hundred quid now, since they cost nowt originally I've technically made an infinite % profit
Assuming you're going to live for another 50 years and need £300 per week to live on, you'll need 3,900 piggy banks...They're apparently worth a couple of hundred quid now, since they cost nowt originally I've technically made an infinite % profit

Handy re the guitar. Why didn't you hold on to it a bit longer?
I have kept the good one
I learn by buying, working on and selling.
I have a collection of Minox spy cameras. I started buying them, mainly from Germany and found I could make a profit, selling in the main to the US.
I did this, hiving off the better ones for me, selling the others and learning as I went. This way, my collection has cost me nothing, but is a good collection.
Many, many moons ago I was a fresh-faced milkman, but still at college. The Inspiral Carpets (remember them? No? Heathen!) released their Cool As f
k album, and advertised it on milk bottles (Cool As Milk geddit?!) solely in the Granada region, as it was called. So I swapped crates of normal bottles with some of the other milkmen and started selling the branded bottles at a fiver a time at various colleges. Sold enough to buy a car
I've still got one somewhere, though it's now worth frig all. I was also in to all the Limited Edition vinyl bands use(d) to promote records and somewhere have stuff like a dozen Stone Roses 'Fools Gold' (on gold vinyl), all sorts of New Order promo vinyl and, my favourite, some of the Wedding Present 'Brassneck' handpainted singles. Probably should've sold them all 20(ish) years ago

I bought a Star Wars playset a few years ago for £100. It was in pretty poor condition, very tatty box and the 4 figures with it weren't in great shape. It is one of the rarest though as you could only buy it from Sears and it had a figure which had been made incorrectly, and so was one of the rarest. I sold it a few weeks ago for £250.
I also had 3 Nintendo Game & Watch games which I'd bought new as a child (they were about £20 I think) and hardly used. Sold them for £250 as well.
