Asking someone out via e-mail - A naff way to do it?

I'm thinking of asking out a female co-worker. I'd much prefer to ask her face-to-face but as we work in different areas of the company and have no real cause to liaise with each other for business purposes I can't guarantee when our paths will next cross. So, I was wondering if I should do it via e-mail, for purely practical reasons. Is this a totally naff way to ask someone out? Will she think I'm a bit sackless or will she realise that I did what I had to to make it happen? Or should I just wait until we happen to bump into each other? It will happen sooner or later but I have no idea when.

Great idea, I've done it loads of times and never been turned down. Take your time and write something really nice, she'll love that, not too sickly or over the top, as you already know her I'd suggest something which compliments her figure, the way she looks today, and what you'd like to do to her. Type something up and post it in here first so that we can fine tune it

At the risk of going off topic, a mate of mine had a chat up line he'd just 'randomly' drop into the conversation which seemed to get the girls interested. I've seen him do it a coulple of times and to my surprise it seemed to do the trick! It must be to do with its delivery in his dulcet Burton on Trent tones; "Ooh..you smell nice today sweetie, have you just 'ad a bath?"
