My girlfriend is obsessed with getting a tan. She visits the tanning beds twice a week, never wears suncream and when we go away she does nothing but sunburn.

She's Spanish (born in England though) so has a naturually darker skin colour. Soon as she goes out in the sun she turns brown in literally 5 minutes laugh

I have told her even though she has darker skin she is stupid but who am I to know eh?

I do sunbathe, but I take regular breaks, and do wear suncream. I end up with a nice tan that isn't a hardcore brown like hers but still looks good and isn't over the top.

My advise to her was everything in moderation is ok. We are going away to spain a week on saturday and I really wan't to stop her from ruining her skin anymore, I don't want her looking like a Gran with wrinkled skin when she has our first kid....laugh

I admit her tan does look nice but it must be really bad surely? I think I have the right way forwards with just tanning when you go away or get a bit of sun, not sunbedding, not worshipping it. End result = me with healthyish skin which looks nice, her with very dark skin which may or may not be healthy?

Opinions?

PS before anyone asks for pics, the answer is no byebyenono

I predict your g/f is <25yrs old.

But (as I'm sure 30 other people will shortly confirm), we're going to need a picture of her before we can properly decide if what shes doing is dangerous. Quickly now.

Where to start...

OK take her to a dermatologist who will tell her her skin has aged 15 years. That'll put the wind up her.

Oh and check yourself out too you sunbathing ponce.

I only sunbathe if we go away, and not for the whole day! I don't worship it like her lol

Sunbathing? Bores me to death. I can lie in the sun but have to have a book to read or something to occupy me. I'd rather be in the pool or doing something more exciting.

I bet she is under 30yo?

Women are under more pressure these days to look "perfect", and tanning is one way they are deluded in thinking makes them look how we men would want them too. Its not the case. smash

Love yourself I say no matter what you look like. smile

When she gets to 40 she will look like a withered prune, and your mates will say "Why did you bring your mum you loser"
Stop her before its too late friend.

Mark my words.nono

I thought it said "Onions on sunbathing" Maybe she should try that

what I cannot understand is, do they not see these older women with orange, leathery, terrible skin and realise that's how they'll end up?

No because they all "read" these crappy mags with perfect airbrushed women in and think "I want to be that person, no matter what"
Its not possible

Us men just bash one out then forget about it!

I was out with a female friend (size 0) the other week, she has serious eating problems and admitted that she was anorexic. While she was in the loos a girl said "Oh my god, you have a perfect figure I wish I was like you" This girl had a great body, young, pretty but was not happy. WTF! confused

meanwhile, young boys/men look at these images and think "I want a girl like that" but get frustrated that they cant (as they dont exist) and get all depressed and phsycotic!

The whole worlds going to implode I tell ya!

No. Because they are not pictured in Heat and Grazia.

75 years old, probably had a tonne of work done but never the less, her number one tip to looking young is she never lets her face in the sun.

I'm not a gayer honest, just read it in one of my wife's magazines and spout it to her every time she moans about "her colour".rolleyes

Tanning should be a rather obvious sign that something is wrong. Its just a shame that people associate tanned skin with health. Its also usually those people who end up looking so awful.

Mind you, why do so many black people look so young, well into their 50s?

Smoking and sunbathing will prematurely age your skin by making it less elastic. Curiously, some beauty places (whatever you call them) have machines that can scan your skin for sun/tanning machine damage.

Because they don't need to sunbathe?

Sunbathing is the most boring thing ever. My boyfriend can lie in it all day his whole family worship the sun!

I'm not into sunbeds either, terrified of cancer scares!

I agree with what somebody said , take her to a skin clinic, I know SK:N do free sun damage tests every now an a then, put you under a light and it shows up all your sun damage, once she see's her self resembling a tea bag I am sure she will try and kirb it!

If I have a important night out I just go to a salon and get a airbrushed tan, but if you get the wring person you can go illuminous!

Opinions?
Opinions? Yeah - I think you meant "figuratively", not "literally".

Also, basically, she's unhappy as she is and sees a sun tan as a way to camouflage this insecurity. Expect her to leave you soon for someone who gives her that comfort that nurtures her true self, rather than someone who tries to stop the effect, rather than counselling the cause.
