Why Muslims don't; eat pork ('new age' answer)

At school I learned that the reason Muslims don't eat pork is for sound health reasons - pigs can carry a parasite which gets into the muscle fibres, and if the pork is not cooked properly, can infect humans.
Yesterday I heard a different story from a lady who practises alternative medecine. Apparently pigs don't have lymph systems, and the the lymph system is, like, the thing that drains out the toxins (unspecified, 'toxins' never are), and like without a lymph system, yeah, the toxins get into the meat, right, and like how did the Muslims know all those years ago that pigs didn't have lymph systems? I mean, how amazing is that?
Which of us is right? I can't believe that one advanced mammalian species failed to evolve such an important thing.

The worrying thing is that these basic facts are known and have been for a century or more, but are disappearing into a haze of ill-education and voodoo which the unthinking hordes, even less educated, gobble up between episodes of Celebrity Soap Rack. Are we approaching a new Dark Ages?

It's a pity because the lady was well presented and smart - but obviously no scientific education. And she gets paid for by the NHS.There has been a lot learnt and then forgotten, and the ancient Islamic world did have some kick ass smart people, but science these days is unstoppable, everything gets written down and published so it'd be pretty hard to have another stupid age.

Pig's do have similar systems us. In the early days of medical research the lymphatic system was mapped in pig embryos as they develop in a very similar way to human embryos.
So to say that Pigs don't have a lymphatic system is stupidity of the highest and most cretinous order. Especially from someone from a psuedo-medical field.

In t'olden days, pigs were used as the middle east's waste disposal machines - they'd clean up/eat garbage, human excrement, general waste etc... and were seen as 'unclean' and tainted as a result.
As with most things, it is included in the Koran as a public health announcement (public order notice), same reason for washing various body parts before praying - it was/is to ensure a certain state of cleanliness that would have been ignored by the masses otherwise. Nothing to do with Allan requiring it.

I guess I always figured Muslims didnt eat it because it was classed as a dirty meat, pigs do live in a bit of mess after all (pretty vauge - but that answered it for me)
...doesnt stop my Muslin friend tucking into a bacon sarnie when he feels like it! - I dont blame him, I luuuuuurve my bacon.
okay - so thats pigs covered, but what about the cows? To beef - or not to beef!? Why don't Hindus eat cows? isnt there some line they live by "thou shalt not eat the animal with the hoof..."
