Following on from the man-fail thread, several near-men (like me) have posted that the one thing standing between us and certain man-dom is the ability to put some fingers in our mouths and produce a piercing whistle.

So can anyone on here write a lucid set of instructions that we can practise with please?

Use index finger and thumb.

Make the diving OK signal. Keep this shape.

Rest the shape on your lower teeth, put top teeth on top.

With your finger and thumb shape, push/curl back the tip your tongue.

Blow.

Mucho practice required!

I was taught to do it when I was about 30, never use it now - tried at a concert a couple of years back, epic fail. smile

Personally I have found no difference between the way I whistle to the way those who put fingers in their mouths to whistle.

Except I can change notes and pitch a bit easier, and a bit louder.

I just roll my tongue onto the roof of my mouth, tighten my cheeks and blow.

I seem to have gone all light headed. My 'never give up until I can do it' approach seems to have starved my brain of needed oxygen.

[Edit] - And no, I still can't emit any sounds remotely whistle related.

I have just gobbed all over my hand.

Where is the whistle being made? Air constricted between which surfaces?

I have never mastered this myself either despite much asking about.

Although I can however properly tie a dickie bow

Nope - just ineffectual huffing. That's what my wife said anyway.

No... Wait...

Oh dear, my girlfriend has just taught herself to do this whilst I remain fairly whistle free, although both our attempts have made us go a bit light headed.

A gentle blow suggests that the noise comes from between the fingers and the bottom lip, but then I hold my finger/thumb at about 45deg to make the whistle. Changes in finger angle and lip shape change the note. Blowing gently across them (not that gently!) reveals a low frequency noise and allows for fine tuning....

Same here, I can only imagine that people who need to use their fingers have rubbish gay tongues.
