Search is down, and this needs attention.
I have had the same mobile number for about 8 years and don't want to change it. I have always been very reserved about who I give it to as I don't want marketing texts or calls.
I'm not sure if you have read about the new 118 800 mobile number directory, but basically it is a directory with your mobile number in, and anyone can now find your number.
I will be opting out for my reasons, and if you want to, please follow this link and scroll down to the privacy section.

Could be wrong but I Think you mis-read something, looks like the person enquiring doesn't get your number, their details are sent to you, then you contact them. The database knows your number but it's not displayed on a page for all to view.

While that's true, they got a lot of peoples' mobile numbers from somewhere, and I make sure I never give mine out. Mine is apparently there in two places, no doubt my past two addresses. So, where did they get mine from?

Hmm.

mmmm... text them from your mobile to let them know you want to opt out...oh and of course that confirms your mobile is active...

Also costs you money to do so. There is an 0800 number IIRC, so at least they pay for that. Still, it confirms your number and I doubt very much they delete it.

If you want to spend another tenner, ask for the information they have on their DB after you've opted out under the DPA, then ask why it's still there smile

I'm not sure WTF it has to do with that mob what my number is. mad

Surely they have to ask before they can broadcast my number hither and yon? isn't there something called protection of data act, or whatever it is, to stop people simply handing out your private info?

There was an article about this on R4 today. It is nothing like it is being presented.

If you have a land line, you will be listed in the telephone directory, unless you are ex-directory. But even if you are ex-directory, if you have ever filled in a form, on or off line, as part of a purchase or a sales & marketing thing, and not checked the box to opt out of being contacted, your number will be available to other organisations to contact you on. Ex-directory or not, as you have consented to being contacted. People contacting you from a listing built up in this way has nothing actually to do with the telephone directory, as it is info you have supplied, and consented to being contacted with by others.

This is exactly the same, except that it is not even a mobile telephone directory like the land line directory is. You will only be on the listing if at some time in the past you have not checked the 'do not contact' box. And they don't give your number out either, instead they tell you who is wanting to contact you, and its up to you if you call them back or not.

Surely all they are trying to do is get everyone to send a cheque for a tenner in to get their details?!?

Any other business they do on top is a bonus!!

Cheers

Saw this in the news, apparently all those companies that ask for your mobile number etc when you take out car insurance etc have been selling the buggers on.

T'news said people need to know your address to request the number, so I'm not that fussed about it.

It seems to depend where you read it. Very confusing.
All I know is I don't want my mobile in the public domain.

Without wanting to come across as some mentalist internet stalker, does 0xxx1 6xxx03 ring any bells?

I see the usual media hype is stoking up hysteria nicely on this story hehe

The misleading thread title itself could have been written by a journalist.

As for opting out, considering that this service is most likely to be used by someone you will actually want to ring back and talk to, and the chances of this service being used in connection with any sales & marketing are going to be virtually nil (it costs them a quid, you aren't going to ring them back anyway, and they have access to the same databases as 118 do already), opting out might be a bit premature.

I don't appreciate unsolicited calls, but when you analyse the realities behind what this service is, in terms of where the database came from, how the service works, and who will use the service, it's a complete non-story.

Were people seriously not aware that just about every big company/group you give your details to has a sideline selling your details to agencies and business?

Just searched their site for mine and a few friends/family etc and none of them are in the system. Normally says "too many results" so put postcode in and voila... no result.

So its a bit crap really as a business!

Just been on BBC News and a smirking lady was going on about how it was all fine and people could opt out.

So they're getting a tonne of negative publicity... did they plan for this? Looks like a lot of money has gone into establishing the company, seems to be a non-starter? Doesn't work and people hate it!

Clever so and so smile I would imagine that the vast majority of people wouldn't have the same kind of forethought though and, as such, their information is happily floating around the public domain without their knowledge or 'consent'.

I use my personal Mobile at work and get credit back. I always bar the number and so many people I work with and for and are connected with have the number, it would be a nightmare to swap it. What I don't want is to be bothered every half hour with sales calls and texts like my mate.
