I' m moving house and recently sold some bits pieces on ebay

On a single £40 lot, Ebay took £5, Pay pal took a further £1.70 i think

Almost £7, Over 15% of the sale price, Is this usual? IS there anyway to reduce this?

For clearing stuff out it makes sense, But can now understand all the moaning about ebay

I believe there are set amounts of commission, the lowest amount is when you start the bidding at 99p. If you have a higher starting price then the commission goes up. I think Paypal charge a specific % amount regardless.

I don't think that's expensive at all.

Where else could you have advertised it to the world using the most widely recognised "brand" for £7?

You couldn't.

15% commission is pretty high on a low value item, especially when Ebay run on a volume based model.

When you factor in the likelyhood of being dicked around and/or defrauded when using Ebay/Paypal, 15% seems a bit rich.

Oh bugger, I just listed 20 things starting at £1.00, listing price of 22p each would now be at 7p if I'd paid attention!

Yes - ever since they put their fees up from 5.75% and made you use Paypal. Exactly as I said a year ago.

I disagree but I respect your view also.

Welcome to ebays world. fking con merchants. You wouldn't so much mind paying the fees if they looked after you but they actually shaft you hard when you really need their help too..

Yeah that is kinda the kicker, The sellers foot ebays bill yet if a buyer disputes the purchase the money is yoinked out of your pappal account

You think that's bad we do £4k a month on Ebay, imagine how much we give them! Then again without them we wouldn't have a market. You could always get up at 5am and go stand in the rain all day at a car boot.

Very true, and it's the reason why I still use them, even if it is grudgingly. Sadly you just have to accept that you will get stung by the occasional cretin.

I've pretty much given up on ebay. I've recently tried to sell a couple of things that had a high value but I just wanted to get rid of rather than just dumping them.

One item was a metal bed, in as new condition but used for a few years. No mattress. Price new £200, offered for 99p. No takers.

Another item , designer kitchen stainless steel extractor. Used for about 2 weeks then taken down as I changed my mind. Totally mint condition as new, just needed a clean as it had been in my garage. Price new ~£600, offered again for 99p. Loads of watchers, not a single bid.

Both items ended up being taken to the dump and lobbed in a skip.

IIRC I had to pay a few p in fees for both non sales.

It's because eBay are a monopoly and can charge what they want. If only people would start using eBid (et al) selling things via auction sites would get cheaper.
Problem is though, people want one point of call and eBay is that...they're a bit like Google in some respects, other search engines are available - but Google is the one everyone pays to link from.

The fees on ebay are steep, especially for private sellers once the paypal surcharge is added in. However it has all the buyers.

I advertised an old 50mm f/1.7 Minolta lens on a Sony / minolta forum, got no takers in a month. Put it on ebay for a higher price "buy it now" (£100) and it went in 12 hours. Once I'd paid fees I ended up with about £87.

If I can sell something a different way I will, but ebay is often the only realistic option. Unfortunately.

Oh, stop moaning you lot... nobody is holding a gun to your heads forcing you to use eBay! If you don't like how much eBay charges, go and set-up a pitch at a car boot sale instead! Some of you whingers remind me of people at my old job who used to bh and complain about the standard of food being offered in the FREE canteen (which was very good, IMO)!

I've sold loads of stuff on eBay and will continue to do so. eBay is great for selling stuff... especially stuff that's a bit specialist and appeals to a very narrow market.

I take it you solely use eBid and not ebay then?

And that is why they can charge what they like.

You have to accept Paypal in order to list on ebay although you could stipulate that the item is cash on collection only wink

For selling yes (I signed up the the 'no fees ever' option. Seemed like a good idea at the time - maybe it still will given time?) - I wish other people would jump on the bandwagon and eBay would quickly become history!
For buying bits and bobs I try eBid first out of loyalty, but it is very quiet compared to eBay....which is the whole problem.
