Is it worth getting a separate cover for a diamond engagement ring rather than relying on the home contents? She's getting me a platinum wedding band so might be worth getting both items insured together.

Anyone done this and recommend any insurance companies?

I would have thought it depends on what it is worth really.

Household cover will probably at least need it listed as an item, no??

Any decent engagement ring will exceed the maximum single item value on a house contents policy. You simply have to notify your insurer to have it added as a 'named' item at its actual value. No need to take out a separate policy.

We have seperate policies for Mrs CVMs engagement ring and my watch.

Worth it.

Check with your underwriters - when we got engaged I discovered the ring exceeded Egg's single item limit and we couldn't pay them anything to up it.

We got single item cover temporarily, then insured with Hiscox who don't have the item limit (at least not for anything we own) - also found their insurance to be reasonably priced and a lot more flexible than the normal mass market insurers.

Most home insurance policies only cover up to something like £1500 per item.
You also need to watch out and see if you are covered if the ring was lost or stolen from outside of your house.

I have it covered under the home insurance policy but listed as a named item. Costs about an extra £120 per year, but it would be worth it should anything bad happen.

We did. Rings, watches, and a few other bits. Then we changed to Hiscox and everything is alright.... They really are very good....

We have out things listed and named on teh household policy as they exceed maximum individual claim. Very easy and we've had to claim against it as well, no issues at all.
