Hi all

No search function working but need advice

So am after a 1.5 - 2 Carat Diamond. It doesnt have to be flawless but enough that it stil sparkles nicely. Wheres the cheapest and best value place I can purchase one?

Are they much cheaper out in Dubai or the states?

How good are the Hatton Garden dealers? Anyone have any good contacts?

Lord Summerisle knows far too much about diamonds. There are also I believe a couple of traders on here but better to just ask him. He's an enthusiast so he likes the diamond talk.

At Christmas I went to Dubai and bought my wife diamond earrings. I paid about £1800 and got them valued in the UK for over twice the price. If your planning on a Summer holiday go to Dubai and the saving will pay for most of your holiday.

Was that a cash offer or an insurance valuation?

I take it you don't require extreme degrees of hardness or thermal conductivity and it is simply the high refractive index which is necessary to the application? In that case don't waste your money on inappropriate materials, you can use cubic zirconia or any number of other substances which are better suited.

Dubai is about half the price of UK. Go with an idea of what you want, and what you want to pay, then take your time finding one which you like. There is also much more range in Dubai within a small area.

For a diamond of such a size, i would not think about Dubai.

because of the law over there all diamonds have to be sealed with the diamonds certificate - so you can't see what you are buying, untill you've paid your money.
Also dont forget you'll need to declare the diamond to UK customs on your return - this way if you do loose the ring, or it is stolen you do have a reciept for the insurance company, so you'll need to factor in 2.5% import duty plus VAT weither you buy from Dubai or USA or Antwerp

As i said - Dubai - the diamonds have to be sealed, where as in the US and UK we are more visual, ie you pick the diamond from the window or counter. what this tends to mean is that those stones that have good certification results, but dont look good will be shipped off to Dubai et al. while those stones that look good - but not necesseraly have the best colour and clarity will go to the UK/US (not true in all cases, but trends.)

in all cases - Colour and Clairty, along with the diamonds Carat weight determin the price of the diamond - but have very little (except at the extremes) with how the diamond appears - how bright and sparkly a diamond is, is determined by how well cut a stone is.

my own opinion would be if your spending this much money (and i dont care how big the stone is when i say that - it goes for any diamond purchase) then go for a well cut stone - something that has been graded by either GIA (cut grade excellent) or AGS ( cut grade 0 - which is a stricter grading than GIA)

That is not true, you can pick the diamond from the window or counter in Dubai. No problems with that at all.

were they certified stones in the window? and by who? (HRD, IGI and EGL seem to be the main labs certifying stones along with GIA)

sorry - in the main i have found the custom over there (and by law in some states in the middle east) that a diamond with a cert needs to be sealed with that cert - after some unscrupilus sort pulled a scam of switching certs and stones, and the practice of sealing the stones with their cert became more prevalent.

They had HRD (most popular), IGI and GIA. Even the 1.01ct D, IF, excellent/excellent was free to handle in the Mall of the Emerates.
