Yesterday, I walked past my neighbour's house and his garden was a mess with a half chopped down tree laying all over the lawn.

I didn't think too much of it and just assumed he'd been doing some gardening.

I saw him today and he told me what had happened.

A young guy had been going round from door to door asking if anyone needed some tree work done at cheap prices.

They said they didn't need any work doing and thought that was it but the guy gave them his mobile number.

They went out later and came back to find that half the tree in their front garden had been chopped down (leaving the other dead half up) and left across the lawn.

A few minutes later the young guy turns up and demands £150 for the tree work to which they tell him to clear the mess in the garden and go away penniless.

He says OK he'll accept £100 and gets told again to tidy the mess and go.

Then he jumps back into his van and says he'll come back round later.

I suggested to Duncan that he might want to contact the police but he doesn't think the police would be interested and doesn't want any more trouble from the guy as he knows where they live.

So what would you do?

cops, it's quite a common gypo trick, but added to it, what if you liked the trees?

This is always the trouble of being a homeowner - they know where you live, as you say. frown

But the Police *may* be interested. It could be construed as criminal damage.

Forget about it! The pikey has done his 'work' and made his money - he won't be back.

The police won't do anything / can't do much - but its worth reporting anyway.

He does have the guy's phone number (payg mobile no doubt).

I doubt there's much he could do with it though.

How exactly has be made his money? The OP says the neighbour gave him nothing.

Trespass and criminal damage i would have thought if they didn't instruct him to do any work?

Sorry, I probably wrongly assumed that when:

He meant his neighbour had paid up the £100... but pikey then left without cleaning up, only leaving the half arsed promise that he would be back to tidy up. Also with the title saying 'Neighbour got scammed' that an exchange of money had taken place.

Sorry, no the guy went away with nothing.

The neighbour's worried he's going to come back with others to collect.

Sorry - was me not reading this properly as usual!

I'm guessing he was a fully fledged Gypo by the sounds of it.

From my dealings with them in the past I honestly wouldnt worry too much about him coming back for just £100 when it means hes actually got to do some work. Also, although the Pikey is a pack animal - and they do 'look after their own' I don't think he'll get the boys involved.

..BUT, as I said above, I would still let the police know.

He's probably found some drain covers to steal for far less effort by now anyway.

Doesn't hurt to inform the police so that if the scrote comes back later then they'll have a record for if he dials 999.

I think he should inform the police, at least they can make a note of it, give him a crime ref number so if anything more happens they will have more to work with.

He shouldn't ignore it, there is criminal damage, trespass, threatening behaviour and a few others I'm sure. (vandalism being another offence)

"Are you the owner of the property?"
"No, sorry, I rent it."

Usually dispatches most salesmen with a minimum of fuss. In fact, they're only too eager to get to the next door.

Report it. First of all, the police should be interested because this kind of scammming is organised and also linked to other types of criminality.

Secondly, there is a possibility that the fella will come back to ask for the money or that the neighbour will suffer from other callers now.

Thirdly, the man has comitted criminal damage - that is a crime in itself.
