I was just reading the thread about the Air France plane that crashed the other week, their was some speculation that the passengers may or may not have spent some time sat in their seats as the plane literally fell to pieces around them. If this is true or not is immaterial in this thread. It just got me thinking.....

These passengers if they did go through this must have been absolutly petrified.

I can't think of a time that i've been truely afraid for my life, or even particularly scared really.

I've obviosuly been apprehensive, and nervous of situations, and just before i did a prachute jump i was pretty worried.

But i don't think i've ever been truely afriad.

So how scared have you been?

I doubt their was any speculation over this. I'd say it was pretty bloody obvious, afterall planes do not have a sign which says "Standing room only"

When I had my first (and last, hopefully) car crash.

An old geezer pulled out of his driveway without looking onto the opposite side of the road. The whole thing happened so fast I thought I'd ploughed straight into his drivers door, which would have been awful. For a few seconds I thought he'd be dead.

It turns out that I had connected with his rear offside and he was totally unharmed.

I was driven around Mexico city, with a screwdriver pressed hard against my windpipe whilst being told to "Close Eyes" courtesy of a dodgy taxi driver....

Got a lift off a supposed friend, ended up getting shot at 3 times with some sort of pistol, by some yardies in north London. Apprently this bloke was just picking up his "gear". I went home and had a lot of whiskey.

No, no, no, they're ALL like that in Mexico city. biggrin

My scariest moment was skydiving, when my chute opened incorrectly because I had somersault through the lines a few times.

I was dropping like a stone, to fast to fly it in safely, and my only option was to hit the 'cut away' and dump the canopy then open the reserve. Making that decision was scary, my blood felt, literally, like iced water running through my veins, and I felt like screaming. I had very limited time to decide as the ground was rushing closer and closer.

As soon as I decided, and I'd pulled the relevant pads and started falling, I felt much better, and then when I realised the reserve had failed to open I still felt very calm and collected, realised I was going to die, ho hum, no big deal.

Then the reserve cracked open, and I landed in a soft ploughed field.

I realised after I was terrified of failing to make the right decision, not dieing. The brief time I'd been torn between decisions I'd been in mortal terror, yet that went away as soon as I had taken command of the situation.

That was my second reserve ride in 60 jumps. Not good. I threw my parachutes in the packing shed and walked away, never jumped again.

How often do things go awry in jumping?

Both in terms of "needing the reserve" and "needing a coffin"?

In 2004 I fell about 20ft of a cliff (in the dark) I broke my spine, and just before the drugs really started to take hold, the doc said.

Hmm looks like he will need surgery.

At 2:00o'clock on a sunday morning in a small hospital on a weekend (in wales) what are the chances that the Surgeon is going to be a spinal cord specialist.

Terrifying.

I don't think I've ever genuinely been scared by/of anything.

Was it the Cyprus system that saved you?

Someday, somewhere, a chap will be confronted by Nolar asking 'Does my bum look big in this?'

That, my friends. That.

That will be fear.

hehe

Mine was a good few years back when I was stupid enough to dump my boyfriend whilst he was driving down a country road! One mk 3 ford cortina (I had class then ;-) ) and me spinning somersaulting and ending up on it's roof in a ditch....... we were shocked for a second or two and then other people came running up and shouting "stand back, it's going to blow"............ it didn't but I couldn't kick the screen or window out so was a very long few mins before they got us out! The car was a total mess how we got out of it I'll never know!

When I was a lot, lot younger, I was exploring a small set of tunnels with a bunch of mates. Unbeknownst to us, some bigger lads thought it would be funny to light a fire in the tunnel, which happened to be between us and the only exit. It was pretty scary as the tunnels started filling up with smoke, and we couldn't get out past the fire.

To this day I don't know if they were aware that we were in there or not.

Yep that sounds Pretty Damn scary to me too!!!

... I was going to say the days leading upto a Colonoscopy - however I image the relief afterwards when everything ended up okay was on a similar par.

I just walked down the street whistling afterwards wink

Umm. Last week certinly was probably one of the most scaryest moments for me. Riding a 900cc Ducati. Getting it on 1 wheel. Really was on shaking like mad after for a good hour or so. Everything seemed a bit slow after when i got back on my 50cc bike frown

Lead climbing overhangs is probably the most scary thing I experience regularly esp when the rope is slack, you're 2-3 metres above your last clip and you're pulling up rope to clip in so you're only holding on with one hand. I'm scared of heights (I mean... standing on a table makes me nervous).

Every time I take a taxi round the Périphérique in the wet. A French cabbie driving, naturellement.

I've been so scared on occasion that I've been known to text friends and family with a "If I don't see you again, just remember that I love you, ok?"

Shot at in South Africa.
Shot at in Nairobi.
Mortared and rocketed in Iraq.
Shot at, mortared and rocketed in Afghanistan, then vehicle ahead hit by an IED and RPG hitting my vehicle. Having to get out and attach the tow rope to pull them out of trouble.

Back out to Afghanistan in Autumn...

Oh, and always terrified after the event, but strangely calm during.
