As I walked past the queue of people paying £15.60 for a day's parking at Reading Station, I pondered this.

Does your average NCP carpark absolutely rake it in?

Reading Station carpark: 1275 spaces, £15.60 for a working day - approx £20k per day. 260 working days = £5.2m per year.

Costs - apart from the cost of owning the land = just about zero. There is never a staff member to be seen and maintenance is kept to an absolute minimum! Ok, so the payment machines cost a little bit to run.

I know I've taken some massive shortcuts in creating the figures - illustrative purposes only!

heard a story on radio 4 the other day. a zoo has a car park attendant who has been collecting the money every day without fail for 20 odd years. one day recently he failed to turn up for work. so the zoo phoned the council up and asked for a replacement car park attendant. councils response? what car park attendant? he had been collecting £400 a day for 22 years.

dont know how true this is but makes a good story for the pub

I imagine so yes.

There is a newish car park up here based on a prime piece of real estate in Manchester.

I guess it holds about 1000 cars.

It charges a daily rate of £3 per car although most cars come and go so they take multiple £3's.
(Say 1500?)

Over 6 days a week, that's a lot of money.

Uh, over 2 Million.

£400 a day, say a 5 day week = 2k per week so 100k plus per year.

My Grandfather was the parking attendant for Bristol Zoo for um 20 years.

I can assure you he was not cashing that sort of money, he died about 12 or so years ago. His tips were a few pence at a time.

It was nice he was able to get us into the Zoo via the back door from time to time and a few pics with the monkeys.

Unless!!!!!

Do you want a ballpark figure, or a carpark figure?

Basically lots. One of our clients has a number of car parks and when working on our system for them, (not car parks), I was showing them the price update system and entered 400%. They commented that this might not go down well in the XXXXXXX business but in the car parks no-one would even notice.

Gosling iirc. NCP's MO in the early days was to purchase bomb sites on the cheap post WWII and turn them into car parks, seems to have worked rather well for them
