Has anyone read this book by Naomi Klein?

If so what did you think of it and did it change your mind about anything?

I have been lent the book and rather than just use it as a door step or put it to the bottom of the pile of books I want to read, I thought I would give it a go and give the person the benefit of the doubt.

So what did you guys think?

Im off to run and hide in the sin bin free shelter now as I think im about to be sin binned for suggesting a book like this

If you want to read it why not just go ahead. Even if you don't agree with what is in it at least you will have read the views of another, I just don't understand why you wouldn't read it.

Uh huh. Not really sure why people only read things that support their own general POV. From newspapers through to academic stuff, getting a different perspective is good, whether it be so you can vent spleen or take something of true value from it. Life isn't as black and white as people make out.

ETA Not saying that's what you're doing D666, I appreciate you're only asking for opinion!

I want to see how the other person thinks and have some more productive discussions, even if I dont agree with what has been said in the book.

Its like the natural disaster that I was talking about last night, New Orleans lost 100+ schools and whilst I understand that the locals have lost everything and they have a sense of pride and want to rebuild by themselves, I can also see the greater picture of the corporation coming in getting the schools all rebuilt asap but using a voucher system.... That is something the locals would not get done in the same time frame.

It leads to questions about what happens if the locals cant afford it (not come up yet), but how would you explain to all the kids that if the corporation didnt come in then they have to be home schooled for up to the next 5 years and thats if they can be home schooled whilst the locals rebuild it the way they want?

the best answer the other person can come up with is why wont the corporation do it for cost price, at which point I have explain that no corporation is really going to do anything for no money or expansion, its not within their interest... I get rebuffed with, 'well I would if it was my corporation'.

So im trying to see it from their POV so I dont have to go down the businesses just do not work for free... full stop!! I can have a more structured, well you need to consider this, and that, etc.

Does that make sense as to why I want to read the POV of the person who wrote the book (and no doubt is very rich now)... it will enrich my discussion skills with new ideas.
