info on Hornets reqd

have seen two in the garden in hte last few days, its not really an issue for me or MrsP but we have a lively cat who likes to chase and catch anything that flies around the garden or the house, particularly moths. not wanting her to go for a hornet and risk a sting with unkonwn consequences, does anyone have any knowledge of hornets, how far they stray from the nest during the day, likely nesting areas, suitable methods of nest destruction (usual ph "nuclear warhead" suggestion not required in this instance)
