suggestions as to what we just saw in the sky?

don't worry, I've not lost my marbles and gone all UFO conspiracy theorist, but I just saw something bizarre, well a few of us did, and got a mate who lives around the corner to have a look too.
There was a line of 4 or 5 'things' that were glowing a reddish orange going up into the sky very slowly. Looked to be rising anyway, and eventually going out of view after a minute or so tops.
All about the same size, and definately looked like they were on fire, but were either too small or too far away to make out a definite shape. It's pretty overcast, and they were below the cloud.
I'd imagine they were quite big though as they looked to be quite far into the distance, but we're flummoxed as to what they could have been.
Only thing I can think of is burning paper balloons, but it seemed way too bright and long lasting.
Any suggestions as to what they might have been? I can't say I'm that confident in my mates theory that Kim Jong Il is attacking a town in Co. Durham, nor that the 'star wars defense system' is based somewhere between Durham and Newcastle. Nor have any of us been drinking!

that was my first thought, but they'd have to be bloody huge to be seen from a few miles away surely, and to last for that length of time. They were really a lot brighter than any chinese lanterns I've seen before.
More like parachute flares, but again they remained up there and burned for too long, and weren't red enough.
I saw the exact same thing on Sunday night while travelling down the M62 near Manchester.Was a string of five orange lights all at the same height and moving in the same direction.I thought chinese lanterns at first but why would they be at the same height and follow each other??

Have seen similar things in the sky at night a few times in the last year.
Posted about it on here and was expecting mass piss taking, it happened a bit lol.
Anyway, at one point we saw 3 bright lights that whizzed around, met up, then zoomed off higher into the sky. Saw a similar thing hanging in the sky a few months later, then it zoomed off again.
I'm not saying it was aliens or anything, i'm just also intrigued as to what it was. It even made the papers here! Their headlines included aliens and the like. We do live in an area surrounded by RAF bases, so they could be trying something new or secret??

(1) fireworks
(2) helicopters
(3) chinese lanterns
(4) flares
(5) airplanes (air show practice?)
(6) parachutes (with flares/lights)
(7) model aircraft with lights
...add to the list as required
Many explainations of such things and the main thing to bare in mind is that distance can be very deceptive when viewing things in the air.
And with the relative darkness of the overcast sky your eyes would probably make out the lights to be brighter than what they actually are.
