It's just one way for dumb, irrational, superstitious people to convince other irrational, dumb, superstitious people.

It means they believe whatever it is they're going on about, but it is no reason why you should.

Why would you swear on a grave?

I think in police interview circles it is known as an 'over assertation of the truth', oft used by liars to get people to believe what they are saying. Because most people wouldn't use such terms, by them using it they think you will take them seriously, when in fact if they are telling the truth, such assertations are not necessary.

Of course some numpties use it all the time to emphasisie a point.

Liar or numpty, you choose.

So why do courts ask you to "Swear on the holy bible" when probably 90% of people never see a church from one year to the next?

Good question I've always wondered why they do this because to alot of people it means nothing, i got banned for drink driving twelve years ago(a very stupid thing to do) and when I was in court I was asked to swear on oath (I swear by all mighty god I had no idea how pissed I was because I was so pissed) the next person waiting to go into court after me was an Indian man wearing a turban, as I understand usually a man wearing a turban is a religious man and his religion would not be the religion traditionally followed by the court, for him I would suspect holding or swearing on a copy of the holy bible would be about as relevant as swearing on a copy of the viz magazine.

In summary using the phrase I swear is a load of old st and whenever I hear someone say it I always doubt weather they are telling the truth.

In court they take appropriate oaths, and there's an atheist alternative too.

A friend of mine was telling me about a near miss he'd had when he pulled out in front of somebody.

"I'd have bet my life there was nobody there." He explained.

"You did." I said.

"Oh yeah."

Interesting, how's does the atheist alternative go? "are you going to tell the truth?" YES "Did you do it?" NO "ok your free to go"

The atheist version would save loads of time, I like it!

The interesting thing is in the Bible Jesus says not to swear on things at all, so what the courts are at saying you have to do it I don't know.

Similarly, I've never understood why people claim to "swear down"
