Discussion
My in-laws live in Spain, they have Spanish residency and have been there for the last 6 years.
A couple of weeks ago we had a text, mum in law been taken to hospital with an inflamed ovary. Now I know they have NO insurance out there (yes I know it's wrong, I'm not looking for judgement).
Cutting a long story short(ish), fortunatly they are still registered with a Dr here in the UK. They flew home around 17th June. Mum in law admitted to hospital here in the UK.
Friday she had surgery, what was thought to be an ovarian cyst turned out to be a cyst on her bowel. Because of the no insurance while abroad she hadn't seen a Dr in Spain and it seems this problem has been manifesting for at least a year. During surgery she had part of her bowel removed, so much so she now has 2 colostomies!
She's on the road to recovery, yet, it's going to be a very long road, colostomies will have to stay in for at least a year!
There's no chance of her returning to Spain for at least that time. My father in law is staying with us here at the moment.
We (We = Me, My partner and our 2 daughters) have a small 3 bed semi, there is no way we can put them both up for a year or indefinatly, we simply do not have the room.
Now obviously my mum in law is going to need alot of healthcare, my question is this, is it wrong of us to ask them to find elsewhere to stay? Of course we will put them up until they can find somewhere but we can't put them up indefinatly.
Also if anyone else has been in the same situation ant advice would be appreciated!

Eurgh. Tough situation - my sympathies (for you, her, and all the family)
First thoughts:
1. Can they afford to rent somewhere in the UK - even if it's somewhere small?
2. Assuming you're not a budding property developer that owns a buy-to-let that would solve this?
3. Assume they don't have any property at all in this country?
4. Is there anybody else in the UK that has a bigger house to put them up in?
5. Were you planning on having an extension/loft conversion/etc. to the house at any point soon that this could catalyse?
6. Any space for a caravan?
A year with 6 of you in a 3 bed semi will drive you all a bit stir crazy, that's for sure. If there's a known end date, at least you can plan around that, though. If it's indefinite, then I can see how that would very much cause issues!

Thanks for the reply!

Simple answer, no. The only way they could do this is by renting out the Spanish property that they own outright, but the market over there is as bad as it is here.J_S_G said:

No, sold up to buy in Spain.J_S_G said:

Yes, but as yet an offer hasn't been made and it doesn't look forthcoming.J_S_G said:

No end date as yet.I'd have some kind of a family get-together, then, say "if only there was somebody with a bigger house - can anybody think of one of us?", and sit there in an awkward silence until (4) resolves itself.
You don't seem keen on the caravan idea... that wasn't entirely in jest! If you've got a decent sized garden/driveway, it is an option. If only for you/the Mrs/the kids to escape to for some respite. The other option if there's a big garden is having some kind of log cabin/summerhoues put up - £3k will get you one that's easily big enough for you/them to be comfortable in at least as a bedroom/living room. Depending on heating, of course!

Hell, building aside, etc. and you could rent it out once they've left.
Speaking of which, I'd get looking at renting their current place in Spain out ASAP... it IS summer now after all; best time to get a quick return on it. Lots of online villa rental sites you can register with, etc.
