If your were to lose your legs
Discussion
Solve a lunchtime argument. Please take this is the good natured humour that it is intended. I am not down playing or even laughing at people with disabilities it is merely a discussion.
A friend asked me what two limbs would id rather loose. I replied both my legs because with modern technology there is not many things you cannot do with prosthetic limbs. he disagrees.
So, we started listing the activities and general day to day things that you could and couldn't do.
So far, i think that you can still do Bungee jumping (waist strap) and paragliding, but he says that H&S would put a stop to it.
The only couple we agreed with was Climbing and snowboarding and even then i think that a sit on snowboard has been built.
Can you lot think of any sport or activity that would be impossible?

A friend of my sisters has one leg amputated below the knee. He went bungee jumping in Oz while on holiday; just before jumping he undid the straps so that when he got to the bottom, his leg and shoe parted company from the rest of him.
He then held the flapping trouser leg and screamed for the rest of the jump.
Organisers didn't find it very funny

I was on a rehab course at the Royal National Orhapedic hospital a few weeks back, there was a squaddie named joe there who had had both legs amputated after a bomb went off underneath him, he put most people there to shame , to see a guy with no legs swimming was quite bizzare, to see two stumps poking out from the water where he was doing handstands was even more strange!!

Have to say one of the most inspirational things I've seen are disabled skiers. I guess you have a choice of sitting around feeling sorry for yourself - which would probably be most people's reaction, understandably - or getting out there and doing something. The latter is probably easier said than done and I've got the greatest respect for people you see whizzing down mountains on off-road wheelcairs and mono-skis.
Serious question - do people who have lost legs use less energy (less weight to move around, fewer muscles to energise) or more energy (work transferred to other limbs)?
Side note - wasn't there a legless athlete who was banned from competing in fully-legged races because he was felt to be unfair competition?

No idea about the first part, but there was a chap with no legs who had (effectively) springs on his stumps which made him quicker than legged athletes and was therefore banned.Side note - wasn't there a legless athlete who was banned from competing in fully-legged races because he was felt to be unfair competition?
