I mean, all you need is a long alloy tube, lots of firework gunpowder (none of that liquid-fuel complexity), a lightweight chair with a seatbelt, a simple gyroscope-based guidance system, a diving air-tank and regulator (for pilot breathing purposes), a nose-cone (probably off an old jet), and a large parachute for when you want to return. How hard can it be? Even the radio can be a standard VHF as it will operate in line of sight from the ground.

why not start with a Jet Engine, you can get these in kits for around £1200.

People with diving tanks don't work to well in space..

Other than that, it seems pretty straight forward.

Agree but I am willing to bet ten whole English pounds that my jet engine will get closer to space than your dustbin full of fireworks with a plastic chair and “seat belt”, spirit level giro system and your kkk nose cone… smile

Houston, we may have a problem with the diving tank! Why wouldn't it work in space?

I had a free afternoon last Saturday, managed a blast into space in a converted dustbin, fuelled by tennents extra.
The effects of space travel were quite dramatic, in fact I can remember very little about it, must have blacked out on re-entry, I came to in my space craft at about 3am, tennents extra fuel cans were everywhere.
To be honest space travel isn't all its cracked up to be, gives you a cracking sore head the next day and dehydrates you.

Mission Control doesn't need to be so well engineered, as this project has already proven.

I'm busy tomorrow, else I'd have flown it. Sorry.

As they said on Flop Gear a while back; it is (relatively) easy to shoot a rocket up into space, yet much harder to make it come back in one piece.

3 cereal packets,10 yoghurt pots, 139 sweet wrappers and a roll of extra wide tin foil.

My mate Charlie says so.

If you want to talk about lettice, select "Homes, Gardens and DIY"

If you want to talk about hypergolic fuels, select "Boats, Planes & Trains"

If you want to talk about abrupt negative feedback to an employee in a corporate environment, select "Business"

As above the problem isn't building a rocket it's making sure you get backdown with out either having a good sun tan or looking like a being splattered on the floor.
