Politics
• Britain: Gordon Brown and his Labour party in crisis
• Italy: Politics permanently in crisis.
Economy
• Britain: Failing banks
• Italy: Banks aren't allowed to fail as they are owned by the local chapter of Cosa Nostra
Fashion
• Britain: Savile Row little more than a bazaar
• Italy: 'Made in Italy' world's leading label (say's who?)
Tourism
No contest - Why?
Crime
• Britain: Europe's most violent nation
• Italy: Tough action has seen crime fall - Mafia have been bought off
Football
• Britain: England relies on an Italian manager
• Italy: World champions - Italians obviously don't know the difference between England and Britain. Would the Italian football team be any good if the players were only allowed come from Tuscany.

PS - I love Italy - but I wouldn't want to live there.

im - serious answer
TBH both countries have their pro's and con's
whilst the idea of living in italy does appeal I couldn't deal with the fact you have to pay through the nose for most things and the fact that dealing with the council or any govt body over there (which if fairly often) makes you lose the will to live compared to the UK

Plus they have a fairly healthy car industry, plus there's all sorts of other industries that are doing surprisingly well - magneti marelli, pagani aerospace (Mr Pagani made his money with some kind of composite materials company).
Only snag if you're italian is having to ride a vespa to work and the possibility that your gorgeous mediterean wife or girlfriend will metamorphose into an 80 year peasant grandmother type literally overnight.
And because they've allowed the mafia's to grow so big, they also have "organised" crime which can do things like get back stolen property and ensure whoever stole it won't do it again. My dad had this when his flightbag was nicked years ago. It turned up 24 hours later after my dad had a meeting with a man in an expensive suit and all the contents had been ironed and tidied up. Seems the mafia were keen to promote tourism to the area and didn't want people scared off by petty thefts!

I couldn't think of an argument that we are a better country than any developed one. Im thinking were better than the Americans but do they have a Chav culture and benefit cheats like we do?.
They certainly have a massive underclass. They just don't wear moody Burberry.im said:
