Has anyone got any real life experience and advice on these?

I will be requiring use of one of these places in the coming weeks for storage of most of my house which I have just sold. Will be having a look myself and the usual use of Google but am unsure what I should be looking for that may not be immediately obvious or apparent.

Thanks in advance.

We put a load of household stuf finto storage a few years ago for around 6 months. Upon getting it delivered to the new house it became apparent that we should've binned most of the crap that we had stored. Then had to get a skip to get rid of it

The storage will often end up being more than the stuff is worth.
Rooms look surprisingly small, yet you can fit a load into them using all 3 dimensions!
I went with bigyellow in Leeds. Seemed alright.

My folks used one for a year or so some time back. The costs mount up if you're thinking about it as a long-term solution.

Security for the few I've seen has been fairly reasonable. Not heard of any horror stories of break-ins...

I used 'Access self storage' for a planned few months that turned into 18 months, due to other issues.
Place was very secure and 24 hour access which was useful.
Take a look at opening hours of the ones you are interested in.

We used a storage place for 6 months last year.

We knew the rough dates and negotiated upfront(costs etc). We mainly stored sofa's beds and whitegoods as we were staying with the inlaws while our house was being built.

as long as you shop arround and get a good deal they seem fine

They are useful for helping to decide whether you actually want to keep things: put it in storage for a year. If it isn't something you were already certain you needed to keep and you haven't even thought about needing it over the year, then bin it.
