Another thread asking what wealth is prompted me to start this.

What to you says someone is 'new money' and what says to you someone is 'old money'. Going on from this what is your classification of the two?
For me (as an example), new money is your typical lottery winner who drives a blinged X5 with chrome 22" spinners and parks it outside a mock tudor new build monstrosity. The way they spend there money would be boob jobs and perma tan.
Old money would be someone who's family has had the money passed through generations and drives something like a Defender whilst living in a tasteful country property. The way they spend there money is much more tasteful, fine wines and port perhaps.

I open the floor to your thoughts.

Old money - houses are very cold and would never even think of asking you to take your shoes off inside

Old money, generally never mention money. I knew a guy who had a huge family estate, propely minted. If you passed him in the street your would confuse him for a hobo

I don;t think it's that black and white.

it's easy to imagine:
Scrap metal dealer. wrought iron gates. swimming pool. orange wife. merc sl/conti gt/'roller'.
vs
mayfair flat and shooting estate in scotland. a chap here is your archetypal blue blood and he's a really 'good egg' and who fully fulfills this..
BUT 'nowadays' given that, to a certain extent, we have a meritocracy you do get:
plenty of people who are educated/savvy/whatever who are self-made but 'intelligent'/AND 'tasteful'
vs
'braying gumballer*' toff polo trustafarian vomit monkeys

'*let's not dwell on this i am just trying to conjure up a certain image.

___________

anyone see that bbc2 home programme this week with the pharmacist who wanted his house to show 'how successful' he was? i'll never understand this attitude. i'll never understand why people care about trying to look flash. same with cars. i'd buy a viper green gt3rs because it's what i'd like not because i'd want to draw attention to myself!

As with every rule, there are exceptions, however generally speaking those from "old money" tend to be a bit less outwardly ostentatious with it.

In a fit of generalisation...
New money: Premiership footballers and all their off-pitch lives entail.
Old money: Wealthy landowners - often rich in assets but can be cash poor, so less likely to be flashing said wealth.

My original post did come across as being a generalisation and black/white but I agree that there are many different factors which could be taken into account.

The difference is simple:

New money: Bentley Continental GT

Old Money: Rolls Royce Phantom

So do I. Sums it up very well. I had a boss who was stupidly wealthy but spent it well but subtley and never shouted about it or dressed as though he had it. His everyday car was an L'reg Land Rover Defender with well over 100k on the clock and moss growing on the canvas roof.

my example 'subject'. talks (quietly) about the 'gallery' he keeps his art at his country home. it's bigger than the house i am about to spend quite a lot of (the bank's) money on! but he's a great guy because he let's good people who work for him use some of his properties and let's people use his memberships to various important sporting clubs and the like. he really shares what he has and does alot for charity but down plays it all.

i guess that;s part of it - to be truly classically british you have to down play things whether well off or not! anything else generally grates..!
