I have no idea because I stopped working about a year ago to look after my son but we have people around to tell us our garden path isn't straight and we need to have it straight as my son will be in danger in his wheelchair.
The solution? I s
t you not..... steps, not the pop group but f
king stairs in my garden to reduce the danger to a wheelchair.....

You have to understand the workings of the local council, they employ people that have sociology degrees who have probably been on an access course, these people have left school with no qualifications other than getting pregnant. Yet when they reach 20-22 the council ships them off on some empathy course and they are unleashed on the public.
The social worker or occupational health worker god bless them are usually people I wouldn't let change a fuse yet they are instructed by the council to come to your house, ours looked at our garden and wrote in her report we had a drop in our path, she said this was unacceptable and the council needed to rectify it, they turned up with spades and a digger to build us some steps.
It took us more time fighting to not have steps built than it actually would getting a ramp built.
I have these muppets turning up every few months and as they are "empowering my son" I have no say in the matter.

There are accidents waiting to happen anywhere and everywhere all day every day.
The solution is for everyone to look, watch, listen and take care of their own safety. Not consider that its 'someone elses fault' all the feckin time.
The sooner we (re)enable common sense in the wider population the better.
Can I ask... edited for proper accuracy
You sir, are very much correct. There are accidents waiting to happen anywhere and everywhere all day every day.

It is illegal to think for yourself nowadays!
Education not regulation, eh?

i worked in a place where the health and safety officer was very on the ball. It dodn't prevent someone slipping on an oil spill, an oil spill caused by a leak from a machine that the person had known about for months.
It also didn't stop someone else peering down a microscope to see clearly what he was cutting with a scalpel. Periodically he'd look at the drawing, putting his glasses on as he did so, before removing them again to peer down the scope. Carelessly, on one of his periodic looks at the drawing, instead of putting his glasses back on his head, he stuck the scalpel in his head.
People will do stupid things, no matter how much care is taken, however that's not to say that obvious risks should be removed from the workplace.

isn't there something in the health and safety at work act section 7.3??
All employees must contribute to their own safety in the work environment??
(or something along those lines??)
Yep - but this is often forgotten by employees - they think it's the H&S Officer job.All employees must contribute to their own safety in the work environment??

h&s is a joke. Why can't people just pay attention to what they are doing/where they are going?
Someone at my wife's work died recently after falling down the spiral staircase while texting. Should stairs be banned, or just t
ts who can't wait until they get to the bottom of the stairs.
The Scottish Parliment has some water out the front of it. There is talk of it being removed due to people falling in while texting. Gets on my tits.

On a similar theme, I bought a bike in Halfords last week. I asked to try one for size, assistant gets it down of the rack. I get on, and promptly nearly fall off, because the wheels had been velcro'd to the frame. I then noticed that all the other bikes were similarly trussed up.Someone at my wife's work died recently after falling down the spiral staircase while texting. Should stairs be banned, or just t

'Why do you do that?' I asked. 'Health and Safety' came the reply. Apparently some little t
t had gone into some store or other, spun a bicycle wheel, and then stuck his fingers in the spokes. As a consequence, all the bike wheels had to be made 'safe'.You couldn't make it up.
Our place has gone a bit too far, replacing common sense with unnecessary, time-wasting procedures and expecting us to go out dressed like a cross between Bob The Builder and Chris Bonnington. All because some replaceable agency driver nearly got his head stoved in when something heavy fell off the FLT that was unloading his vehicle.
It's the natural evolution of the compensation culture; Nothing is "our" fault any more - if an accident happens, people want to know why something wasn't done about preventing it, not what they should have done to avoid it. Consequently, people will rely more and more on H&S and less and less on their own common sense.
Thing is, "It's OK thanks, I'll rely on my own common sense not to get killed to death" is no defence and non-compliance with these rules will result in disciplinary action.
I sometimes wish that there was a waiver I could sign that states "If I do get injured because I did something stupid, then I promise not to sue the company because I can pretend it was their fault that I was stupid", but there isn't - I've checked.

I was a H&S advisor for a large telecommunications company before my position was made redundant and in my experience H&S is more geared towards protecting the company from prosecution/paying out damages than protecting people nowadays.
You've hit the nail on the head there.I trust you used a safety hammer, a non-slip nail and were wearing safety goggles?
