I don't know much about art.....

But I bought a rather lovely framed print of this today:

Always been a fan of Lowry's work - we have a growing collection of his prints in the house - but, until today, I'd never really looked at any originals.
Spent around 2 hours looking at paintings in the Lowry centre in Manchester, followed by lunch in the terrace bar.
Thoroughly recommended day out if you're in the area.

See to me that is art, not like the abominations art students come out with these days.
You may think its a good idea to take LSD, mix cement with the contents of an oxfam shop, pour it into the shape of an ant hill and claim its your "inner feelsings" but to be quite honest, you're s
t.
Id personally like to be able to collect some paintings, but i do find the cost off putting

If it floats your boat then fine!
I've never really been motivated too much by 'art', but a couple of years ago I came within a ballhair of spending a ridiculous amount of money on a couple of 'originals'. They, (in my eyes at least!) were beautiful and there's a bit of me that regrets not buying them, BUT.............
For me and SWMBO's anniversary a year ago, I bought four canvases and me and my family, (40yo, 38yo, 5yo and 2yo), went daft with them, (with any paint I had lying around, poster, emulsion, gloss, aerosol, brushes and rollers.), one Sunday morning for 'somthing to do' and to be honest, They're just as, (if not more), beautiful.
They're on one of our living room walls and I love them.

Something I have always wanted to do but have never found the time to do it. Which is a shame given I only live 2 minutes down the roadThoroughly recommended day out if you're in the area.

Did you drive through Bury on the way? Did you grab a Cornish on the way
Interesting you should say that..... the Lowry complex doesn't offer a traditional (reheated) Cornish savoury snack as one of their multitude of eating options.
Missed opportunity, perhaps, or just a sign that there's no call for 'traditional Cornish fayre' in the Republic of Mancunia?
I was looking round a gallery in London a year or so ago and saw this beautiful Le Mans original and kept looking at it. The next day my missus phoned up the gallery, bought it for me, got it framed, and gave it to me for my birthday a few weeks later. It now sits pride of place in my study!
Art is a very, very personal thing. Just check out the 'pointless things in your town' thread as an example of how people's opinions differ when it comes to art. Some on there I agree with, some I don't (I thought the brick train was
).
I find Lowry nice, but that is all. He hasn't caught my attention enough to want to put anything of his on my walls.
However, we have a few limited editions by various artists, one of which is this:

Which I think is fantastic.

My Aunt went out with Lowry's brother (I think), must have been the 50's, & was offered an original but turned it down because she didnt like it. I think she regrets that now!
He was an only child, AFAIK.Lots of stories around Manchester surrounding Lowry encounters.
My own personal one is that when he died, the company handling his estate were flogging the paintings from his house for what is now, relatively, peanuts - although, back in the 70s, £50 for a painting was 'quite a lot'.
My father dismissed Lowry's work as 'rubbish', so wouldn't take my mother over to purchase some. She has regretted it to this day.
The short film about him was very good - although I'd love to hear more of the interviews recorded with him - he seemed genuinely bemused by his fame.
'I'm not a painter - I'm just a man who paints'
Even more interesting is that, despite becoming a world-famous artist during his lifetime, he still continued working as a debt collector until the day he retired!

In my office, I have a print (of a painted original, IYSWIM) from Fiat, showing all their badges from the day they were founded until the last incarnation (the blue roundel with laurel wreath) - I love it, but Mrs 75 isn't so sure. Which is why it's in my office.
I'd love some more automobile related art, but I haven't found anything we both like, as yet.
