3 men rent a hotel room for 1 night, they are told it will cost £30 so they each pay £10 & are shown to their room.

On returning from the room, the porter is informed of a mistake, the room should have only been £25 & is told to go back to the room & refund £5 to the 3 men.

On the way back to the room, the porter realises that £5 cannot be split equally between the 3 men, so he decides to give them each £1 & keep the other £2 for himself.

To recap, the 3 men ended up paying £9 each & the porter kept £2 (£9 x 3 = £27 + £2 = £29)

Where did the other £1 go?

There is no missing Pound. Each man paid 9, which totals 27 (25 for the hotel, 2 for the porter), and each man has 1 in his pocket when they walk out. That's all 30.

Um, didn't go anywhere. You are adding it up incorrectly.

You do the transactions in the order in which they happen. So 10+10+10 = 30.

Take 5 off = 25. Add 3 for the refund = £28, leaving the 2 he keeps for himself.

I'm reckoning...

so why pay £27 (£9 x 3) ?

personally, i'd get my £2 back off the thieving little scrote and put it in the kitty for the beer drink

The hotel has £25, the men have £3 between them, the porter has £2, I can't see what the problem is?

Why are you adding the £2 on, the men essentially paid £27 for a £25 room and gave the porter £2

how can they all pay £27?

they paid £30 less £5 refund = £25

divide £25 by 3 = £8.33

add the £1 each offered by the porter = £9.33

£9.33 * 3 = £28

plus the £2 kept by the porter

£28 + £2 = a stupid riddle that you can't get your head around wink

"As I travelled to St Ives,
I met a man with 7 wives.
Each Wife had 7 sacks,
in each sack was 7 cats,
Each cat had 7 kittens.
Kittens, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were going to St Ives?

This should be very easy! (Was on tv Saturday night) wink

No.

I've got small hands but I'm wearing gloves with special apple skewing knitting needles attached.

Ok, let's try it really slowly.

The men pay £9 each. £27

The room is £25.

The porter steals £2.

OP.

Before we address the issue of billing complexities, why were the men renting a room together?

Were you one of them?

Did you take turns to be the woman? Or was it decided using another set of criteria. Least body hair, MX-5 ownership, interior design instinct?

That's the enigma within the riddle.
