I am looking for your insight into the points system for traffic offences.

On the whole it is a very unfair system, in that I mean the sentence to crime time period. I have seen rape cases that have a lesser sentence to that of speeding or jumping red lights or anything that can add points to your license. And a shed load of other cases to boot.

Personally I would rather pay £250 for the offence and receive no points (or the points system abolished) this would help in a few ways.

1, the revenue collected will increase as the offences will still be committed, this could then be used to offset the bad times like now. And someday the larger fines would scare people more.

2, Without the points system as it is now if a person collects the dreaded 12 they get banned, but the government has collected say £240 in fines and now has a person / family on the dole. Average housing benefit is say £700 + all the other benefits to be paid out because the driver fked up for a split second albeit 4 times. And that’s per month.

3, Now in a period of crisis or (a skint government they could increase earnings / coffers by a great deal using this method).

I don’t know maybe its just some jumbled crap in my head from the events of Friday. (This is another story which I will create a thread for but not yet)

But to me create money from fines but do not stop those that pay the fines from paying, pay your fine still pay your tax, NI etc keep the economy going.

I would like to add we do need a cut off point though. We cannot have 90 through a 30 and that sort of thing and dangerous driving laws should still be relevant.

Right let the back stabbing and flaming begin. I have left the building and have headed for higher ground. The traps are set and have set fire to the bog roll.

But this would not be fair for those who have money. They could quite easily afford a 4 figure fine, whereas the 17 year old 6th form student might struggle to find £30. Without the ban element as a result of totting up it is a case of if you can afford it, you can drive at any speed.

Apart from the fact that they would not be elegable for any benefits. If they lose their job due to needing a driving license and they no longer have one, then it is contributary negligence, which would mean no benefits. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

...and prompt a massive outrage. Just look at the vitriol aimed at speed cameras.
