I'm 21, Looks like my Car Future is Over
Discussion
My girlfriend dropped the bomb yesterday, she thinks im earning enough for her to only work 3/4 days a week and study at Open University.
My thoughts were that OU was designed for people that work and dont have time to go to uni and study, she is 20, both earning a fair wedge to say the least, got a mortgage and first house in february, i bought my ST in April and was planning with my spare cash to supercharge it and so on..
Obviously not anymore! We are now "Living off my wage" so she can doss around 2 days a week and go shopping with her mum and do a bit of OU at the same time.
OU lasts 3 years, so ive done some calculations and we wont be able to afford much other than mortgage bills, shopping, petrol and the general bits to live whilst she is only working 3/4 days a week.
I can see this lasting forever if i dont put a stop to it, as her mum only works 3 days a week and is off pretty much all summer. My car dreams are over, plans for the Elise/Cebera have disapeared

You are obviously not happy with this so don't put up with this crap!!!!!!!
Unless she has genuinely come up with a long term plan to pay you back for the extra bills you'll be paying or she returns the favour and support you with a dream, don't do it.
She can't just announce this, discuss it as an idea and accept the other persons view points and make it a joint decision yes, but don't state it.

Well thats the thing, She wants to train to go into Teaching [Dont ask]
She is saying its a healty wage for what she wants to go into, plus with the holidays and that.
She is a very clever girl, 12 A* at GCSE and 4 A's at A Level
I must admit at the moment she is earning more than me, obviously dropping below my wage.
Ive said to her, i dont wana be hanging around whilst she does this for 3 years, i wana go out buy bits for my car, go out with the lads and all the other stuff a 21 year old should be.
She has now said okay she will do saturday's as she is at the moment, Gota love a bit of OT really.
But my arguement is, why take days off to do OU when surely those days off she could go to a proper uni and do it quicker. For some reason that is not in her plan.
In the long run yeah she will pay back, but (hopefully) i will be earning alot more anyway so wont really matter. Meh
Rant over i guess?!

I always thought that OU was designed so you could stay working full time. It hard work and dedication is needed from her so help with that would be good but I don't see why she needs you to support her financially. She is saying its a healty wage for what she wants to go into, plus with the holidays and that.

I think the above posts pretty much some up the general feeling on this and I'm not going to buck the trend
But really, I'm not saying this is going to happen, but what is the likelihood of her sponging off you for the next 3 years while she gets this qualification and then she buggers off? I definitely wouldn't even consider supporting my girlfriend at 21 especially having just bought a house....

Open Uni is for people who work full time AND want to study. It's geared so you can do both.
Tell her that you wont fund her lifestyle.
Exactly what ive said, you do OU aswell as work!Tell her that you wont fund her lifestyle.
Well technically she will pay for the course but at the moment this is how things are:
I pay:
Mortgage
Redundancy cover insurance
Phone Bill
Internet
She Pays:
All food shopping
All Council Tax
All Bills
Both our Petrol
I do end up paying more anyway.
