Hi folks, it's my old man's 60th on Wednesday and we're looking to get him a decent birthday prezzie. He's home on friday which gives us a bit of a chance to get something sorted out.

He's an engineer, and has been working on ships most of his working life. Loves all things engineering, especially steam related stuff. He's a bit of a petrolhead, but struggles with getting into low cars and so on so trackday type stuff is out of the question. Mad keen on photography, but has just about everything you could ever hope for. Essentially, he's a git to buy for.

I'm going to try and get him a ride on the tornado steam train or better yet a poke around it, and one of those 35 quid lordship things for a quick laugh, but I'd like to get him something he can keep. I saw a little desktop brass steam engine on here not long back but can't find it, other than that, I'm struggling!

Any suggestions? Budget is a few hundred quid.

I'm sure there was a thread simaliar to this, had a link to some cracking model engines, can't remember a thing about it though.

I bought my dad a personal plate for his 65th. Not something he'd ever have bought himself, but he loved it!

Nauticalia sounds perfect for you http://www.nauticalia.com/

everything ships, steam and engine related...some awesome working engine models. Im sure a lot of them are sourced from other places (and may be cheaper direct) but would seem an ideal fit with your fathers interests!

Bit of a long shot but how about something like this to satisfy his engineering "needs":

Or same watch in black:

Or something very different:

All of them are well within budget.

Hope that helps kick the thought processes into action?

Bought my uncle one a few years back and he loved it. My aunt hated me though biggrin

Thanks for the suggestions folks. The steam engine seems to be a winner so far.

Whisky / Whiskey he's got loads of, and has a couple of nice watches too. Liking the suggestion Nolar, but I've already got a triphase, he's not allowed one hehe

They're great, one of a few I've got from werners now, take a bit of getting used to when you've had a few sniffs of the barmaid's apron though, so to speak smile

Ah ok. I could almost read your "likes" there then? wink

How about a one off piece of art or sculpture comissioned for him. A friend has something in her studio. It's a cannon made from parts of a motorcycle exhaust.

Could you get something made out of something relating to/or from steam engines perhaps?
